In their submissions to the Australian Law Reform Commission’s review of copyright legislation, both Universities Australia and the University of Sydney argue the Copyright Act is holding back innovation in the tertiary education sector.

The sector is particularly concerned that current “fair dealing” provisions in the Copyright Act do not support the use of copyrighted material in the delivery of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

“The University supports copyright law reform that will foster new and innovative ways of providing education to a wider audience,” wrote University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence in the university’s submission to the review.

“Of particular concern are the communication limits that restrict the ability to teach our students in a way that is fair in other jurisdictions,” Dr Spence wrote.

How advocacy creates safer streets and saves lives: A Q&A with Paul Steely White | TheCityFix

How advocacy creates safer streets and saves lives: A Q&A with Paul Steely White | TheCityFix | Healthy and Sustainable Living MOOC 2014 | Scoop.it

TheCityFix recently interviewed Paul Steely White – Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives – regarding the organization’s role in successfully advocating for New York City to adopt a “Vision Zero” approach to road safety. First adopted in Sweden, Vision Zero is one of the most ambitious road safety frameworks ever implemented, as it aims to eliminate all road fatalities or serious injuries. Each year, 1.24 million people die from traffic crashes around the world, and motor vehicle usage is increasing. Cities around the world can learn from the success of advocates like Transportation Alternatives in influencing the policies that shape our streets.

Recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that the impacts of climate change are already “widespread and consequential.” Yet the effects we may see in the future still largely depend on the actions countries take to reduce their emissions today.

Our new infographic, based on IPCC data, depicts the likely consequences of various emissions pathways ranging from a low-carbon future to a fossil fuel-intensive one.

Why Community Land Rights Belong in the Sustainable Development Goals | World Resources Institute

Why Community Land Rights Belong in the Sustainable Development Goals | World Resources Institute | Healthy and Sustainable Living MOOC 2014 | Scoop.it
A U.N. working group of 70 member states recently adopted a proposed set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to succeed the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set to expire in 2015. The “post-2015” SDGs will aim to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030 while also supporting inclusive economic development and environmental sustainability. While the proposal puts forward a plethora of targets for the international community to pursue between 2015 and 2030, it leaves out a critical component of improving rural livelihoods—securing community land rights.

Making Agriculture a Priority to obtain a Sustainable Tomorrow

Making Agriculture a Priority to obtain a Sustainable Tomorrow | Healthy and Sustainable Living MOOC 2014 | Scoop.it

Agriculture features prominently in the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability newly released sustanability report “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A future worth choosing” (PDF). The message is clear: agriculture is a fundamental component of sustainable development, and smallholder farmers can help the world achieve the necessary transformations.

The report is launched 25 years after the pioneering Brundtland Commission report, which first introduced the concept of sustainable development. The High-level Panel has formulated a new vision for sustainable growth and prosperity, and the mechanisms needed to achieve it.
