Linguistic Idealism: Time To Dump English As Europe's Lingua Franca

Linguistic Idealism: Time To Dump English As Europe's Lingua Franca | Teaching English as international language | Scoop.it

It is now high time to replace the language of the victors of the last Great War and the Cold War -- English -- by that of the most mistreated people in the Old World: Romani, the European language par excellence. Many dialects of this language, which is the object of standardization efforts, are spoken in Europe's 42 countries by the long persecuted Roma. In this perspective, after six decades of economic integration, the quest for a genuine and sustainable political integration would take place through cultural integration, via the strength of the language of Europe's weakest people.

How English Is Evolving Into a Language We May Not Even Understand

How English Is Evolving Into a Language We May Not Even Understand | Teaching English as international language | Scoop.it

Thanks to globalization, the Allied victories in World War II, and American leadership in science and technology, English has become so successful across the world that it's escaping the boundaries of what we think it should be. In part, this is because there are fewer of us: By 2020, native speakers will make up only 15 percent of the estimated 2 billion people who will be using or learning the language. Already, most conversations in English are between nonnative speakers who use it as a lingua franca.

The Intercultural Communication Challenges of Skype Meetings

The Intercultural Communication Challenges of Skype Meetings | Teaching English as international language | Scoop.it

When this fact of intercultural business communication is finally out in the open, the burden of pretending is lifted. Suddenly everyone can agree about just how awkward it is to function effectively in a foreign language when using Skype. That openness inspires people to be more patient and helpful, and less judgmental of one another. A shift in attitude, along with improved intercultural communication skills, not just an improvement in technology, is what it’s going to take to meet the unprecedented challenges of communicating globally across cultures online.
