To cut to the quick, Schank thinks Higher Education is a con. You pay through the nose for not very much more than a three or four year vacation and a good social life. The courses are poor and the system designed to select researchers.

#No!

How tablets are invading the classroom

How tablets are invading the classroom | Teaching English as a foreign language | Scoop.it

Are tablets really the answer for education? We think so, but the truth is that touch devices are so popular right now that they’re being touted as the answer to everything. A few years back, before tablets burst onto the scene, there was a push to equip students with netbooks, but it was met with mixed results. Having an entire school filled with tablet-equipped students has obvious benefits, but cost and device management are serious hurdles to overcome.

Tablets are hot right now, with a lot of schools choosing them over laptops for 1:1 programs. Which would you rather have in your classroom?

Task 5: Create an Image Book Using Bookr

For this example activity we’ll use a poem and show how it can be illustrated, but the text could be anything from short stories that your students write to phrases, or even single word vocabulary books.

Excellent for vocabulary task or reading comprehension !!

Nik Peachey's curator insight, December 23, 2012 4:21 AM

This is an example of the kinds of tasks and activities I can produce for teachers to help them understand both the technological aspects of how to use technology as well as the more pedagogical aspects of how to implement it within the learning context.

Best Flashmob Videos from Around the World, Cultural Flash Mobs...

It's Friday and time for some fun!

On Fridays I often post something playful or creative to start our weekend off right.

I thought these videos of flash mobs from around the world really great -- they made me want to get up and dance :)) And they create great stories to share! Just imagine the stories people will share about their experience participating or watching.

Storytelling is a creative expression -- and I love flash mobs as a creative expression of people: the singing, dancing, choreography, the element of surprise, and the sheer joy that's involved. Grass roots art -- and that's what storytelling has always been, too. Let's celebrate that also, this Thanksgiving weekend!

Having recently participated in the flash mob dinner event Diner en Blanc here in San Diego, I can tell you what a hoot flash mobs are.

My favorite video here is the one from Mumbai, India. The NYC one is OK but too orchestrated for me. But I do love the images from the event -- they are really cool.

Jeanne Melanson @empowerhere sent the link to me, thinking I'd like to curate it. She was right! Thank you Jeanne.

Enjoy these videos and get your dancing shoes on for the weekend!

The real scalibility in education comes with the Internet....freeing education from a place and from a specific time. With this comes changing pedagogies including peer-learning. Donald makes a case for recording lectures - videos provide opportunity for repeated access to new content. Some familiar messages here and interesting focus on scalibility.

A nice feature of this resource is that you can export your story to Kindle for a small fee (approx $10). You be able to read your ebook on your Kindle, or sell it through Amazon. The ebook reads like a normal Kindle ebook, except that choices are included using hyperlinks.

Taking care of your own continuing professional development (CPD)

This talk looks at how business English teachers can access online networks and resources to ensure that they stay in touch with their profession and continue to grow as professionals. This area is of particular importance for BE teachers who often work in an environment that isolates them from other language teaching professionals. Awareness of online resources, digital networking practices and information literacies can help them to ensure that they continue to develop whilst building a personal profile within the global online community.
