During the school year, students are expected to listen to and absorb vast amounts of content. But how much time has been devoted to equipping students with ways to disconnect from their own internal dialogue (self-talk) and to focus their attention fully on academic content that is being presented? Listening is hard work even for adults. When students are unable to listen effectively, classroom management issues arise.

Teaching the difference between hearing (acknowledging there is a noise but not necessarily engaging the brain to understand the sound) and listening (consciously trying to make sense of the sound) would be a good first step too.

In a study published in the January 2015 issue of The American Naturalist (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/679106), Gustavo A. Londoño, Duván Garcia, and Manuel Sánchez Martínez report a novel nesting strategy observed in a tropical lowland bird that inhabits an area with very high losses to nest predators.
 
How can tropical birds cope with the high rates of nest predation that are typical in most tropical habitats? Are there nesting strategies that allow tropical birds to escape predators such as birds, mammals, and snakes that regularly eat eggs and nestlings?
 
During the fall of 2012, while working on a long-term avian ecological study, the researchers discovered the second nest ever described for the cinereous mourner (Laniocera hypopyrra) at Pantiacolla Lodge in the upper Madre de Dios River in southeastern Peru. They observed that upon hatching, the chicks had downy feathers with long orange barbs with white tips, which was very different from any other nestling they had observed in the area. The peculiar downy feathers attracted their attention, but the nestling behavior provided a more important cue. While researchers were collecting morphological measurements, the nestling started moving its head very slowly from side to side in a way typical of many hairy caterpillars. While working in the area, the investigators found a poisonous caterpillar with similar size and hair coloration as the nestling. Therefore, the researchers suggest that this is an example of Batesian mimicry in which the nestling tricks predators into thinking that it is a toxic, spiny caterpillar rather than a highly edible nestling.
 
This remarkable adaptation may well have evolved to decrease nest predation probability, increasing nesting success in this species. Examples of Batesian mimicry are very rare in vertebrates.

Cursive handwriting will be scrapped from the Finnish education curriculum and replaced by lessons in keyboard typing, it has been announced.

So sensible to teach typing, but I find children who can write cursive can read it.  It will be a pity to loose the ability to read old text, e.g. a letter from Granny!

I know of something even more difficult and frightful and face-flushed-all-red than getting feedback.

Giving it.

In my role as assistant principal, I give a lot of feedback.  I give it to students; I give it to staff; I provide it to parents when appropriate.  I give it when requested and formal (e.g., teacher evaluation) and when it is not solicited, or expected, or necessarily wanted.  So why is it so difficult?  After all, isn't the "giver" of feedback the one in the driver's seat, the one in the "active" (command) position, while the recipient plays the passive role, listening (maybe) and absorbing (possibly) your wisdom?

We may not need to understand how it works to use it, but for  our students such knowledge will make a difference to their career opportunities.  Knowledge and experience in programming and codes early will build those brain pathways when its most effective.

Now that's  talking ! Specially  as it gives a door into the child's head.  This should also be pursued by analyzing writing for the same purpose. Reading ability has always taken centre stage. Putting the focus on writing is more logical .

I so agree with this.  Play the games and consider what the learning is before you give it to a student.  At least some of the games listed are available in Australia,  I would add another - Match 10.  It works on so many levels from simple number facts to strategy, with multiple students working on the same device. This one you can't do on paper!

Traditional methods do not suit modern classrooms, expert says

 

Professor Fullan identifies them as the root of the problem. But he stresses that the new methods of teaching he describes take teachers beyond being “mere facilitators” to becoming “partners” who recognise the “importance of proactively learning alongside students”.

 

“Through such partnering, teachers not only become learners themselves, but also begin to see learning through the eyes of their students,” he writes.

 

“This ‘visibility’ is essential if teachers are to continuously challenge students to reach for the next step.”

 

The report acknowledges that many of the teaching strategies it describes have been “advocated for at least a century by the likes of Dewey, Piaget, Montessori and Vygotsky”.

 

But it says that today’s conditions means they are now being widely embraced: “

 

Through the combination of the ‘push’ of traditional schooling that fails to keep students or teachers engaged, and the ‘pull’ of new pedagogies unleashed through digital access, the transformation of education systems on a broad scale becomes not only possible, but inevitable.”

Despite the popularity of Maslow’s Hierarchy, there is not much recent data to support it. Contemporary science — specifically Dr. Edward Deci, hundreds of Self-Determination Theory researchers, and thousands of studies — instead points to three universal psychological needs. If you really want to advantage of this new science – rather than focusing on a pyramid of needs – you should focus on: autonomy, relatedness, and competence.

This struck such a cord with me.  I can pin point the moment when I recognised that my life was my responsibility, and can see the energy that flowed from that realisation and how it's influenced every decision and action in my life. We introduce the idea to our students in a general way, (Why is it your Mum's fault that you left your homework at home?Isn't it your responsibility?) but certainly don't help them to appreciate it deeply in their lives.

...Babies sleep a huge amount = massive learning while awake, diminishing to middle age when we learn little, sleep little.  Food for thought - if we slept more would we learn more?

Numbers 1 through 8 for me are so relevant and obvious. If we can't immediately achieve them, striving for them is a definite. School shouldn't be the old-fashioned place which can't keep up with what happens at home .  It should be where students are inspired and stretched.
