Why Study Math? Because It’s Forever

Why Study Math? Because It’s Forever | Teaching | Scoop.it
The eternal question asked by students around the world: what is this math good for?

In his funny TED talk, Spanish mathematician Eduardo Saenz de Cabezon says most mathematicians either defend math by arguing it exists all around us or attack the questioner by pointing out that math is beautiful and doesn’t need a reason to exist, like poetry. But Saenz de Cabezon says the real reason math is worth studying is that it’s forever. A proved theorem is more permanent than any diamond.

David Bozetarnik's curator insight, April 30, 2014 11:35 PM

Blended learning has much potential.  However, it is only PART of the solution to why ails education today.  It is not a replacement for funding.  Adequate funding, whether online of f2f, must go hand in hand.  You can't maximize the potential of education while cutting necessary $$$.

  • WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

The  key factors are: Learners’ age, back ground knowledge, the purpose of learning, the learners’ circumstances (employed, students, unemployed, etc…)

  • DO YOU HAVE THE COURSE CURRICULUM?

In many cases the course curriculum does exist, for example: National Curriculum, University course modules , In-house corporate training.

  • WHAT EXTERNAL PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS NEED TO BE MET?

All external examination bodies provide an exam guide or syllabus which you have to insure your course will address them.

  • WHAT IS THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT?

Would your learners attend any face to face classes? Do they access their course from home, work, or college? Do they work as a group or individuals?

Guide: Using the SAMR Model to Guide Learning

Guide: Using the SAMR Model to Guide Learning | Teaching | Scoop.it

Technology is an immense tool that can transform the way students learn. One of my favourite quotes which demonstrates this comes from Steve Jobs:
“What a computer is to me is it’s the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with, and it’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.“

Just technology!

Sebastián Vásquez's curator insight, September 21, 7:13 PM
In my opinion, substitution, argumentation, modification and redefinition (SAMR) model is a very useful tool to have into account as a starting point, or as a reference one, to start thinking about the way teachers can design lessons and the role they want technology to play into the classroom. It could also be used as a way to make students reflect upon the way they normally use technology and to make them aware of other possibilities and different ways in which they could do it. Furthermore, we can use this method as a pretext to discover others and to explore other ways in which technology could help us all to enhance teaching-learning processes.

Traveling Teaches Students in a Way Schools Can't

Traveling Teaches Students in a Way Schools Can't | Teaching | Scoop.it
American education is largely limited to lessons about the West.

When I turned 15, my parents sent me alone on a one-month trip to Ecuador, the country where my father was born. This was tradition in our family—for my parents to send their first-generation American kids to the country of their heritage, where we would meet our extended family, immerse ourselves in a different culture, and learn some lessons on gratefulness.

My family’s plan worked. That month in Ecuador did more for my character, education, and sense of identity than any other experience in my early life.

This is a great article. I think it applies to people who live in all developed countries (not just the USA), as well as the privileged people from the less developed places. It touches on a lot of things I care about - seeing, feeling, smelling how other people live. Learning that we are not all the same. Knowing that it is ok to not engage with the "American/Australian/Western Dream". Knowing that it is ok to have your own dreams that are different to other people.

Sarah Cannon's curator insight, December 16, 2015 7:15 PM

Being able to travel is a great gift. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing new places and learning about cultures. Unfortunately, the last time that I could afford to travel far from home was when I was young and I didn't understand the amazing opportunity that I had at the time. I traveled to Aruba, and to New Brunswick, Canada. Both amazing places. If I could go anywhere, I'd go to Germany, London, and Ireland as soon as possible. My great grandmother was from England, and my great grandfather was from Canada, I'd like to visit their home towns. Traveling places would definitely be a better learning experience than leaning about a place in school. You get to experience the real thing. Interact with the locals and maybe even get involved with the local traditions. Traveling to learn is definitely an experience worth wild.
