PBL- Let the Class Solve World Problems

PBL- Let the Class Solve World Problems | Purposeful Pedagogy | Scoop.it
Can kids solve real life problems that affect our world? Sure! Why not? Many of you know the 7 sterile steps to PBL. How about adding a little more to the 7 steps? Here are a few ideas about how to...

Beth Dichter's curator insight, October 22, 2014 8:00 AM

Check out this great visual on Problem Based Learning (PBL)from Mia MacMeekin. It provides a look at the seven steps found in PBL. For each step she provides a number of ways for students to think about the specific process. What are the seven areas?

1. Start with a real life problem

2. Map it out

3. Prototype, prototype, prototype

4. Be creative

5. Think global

6. Join a challenge

7. Set goals

8. Create learning moments

Along the way she also makes some suggestions on what you should be doing as a teacher. If PBL is new to you (or your students) this would be a great visual to have your students recreate, where they may change words and add images to make it their own. Then hang it in your classroom and support them as they become experienced at problem based learning.

What is deeper learning? This post defines it as the following six competencies:

* mastering content

* critical thinking

* effective written and oral communication

* collaboration

* learning how to learn

* developing academic mindset

The post shares an example from one school that uses deeper learning, provides additional resources on how to cultivate academic mindset, and deeper learning and the common core, educators and deeper learning, and getting started with deeper learning.

Collaboration Matters

Collaboration Matters | Purposeful Pedagogy | Scoop.it

Blogger's note: This post focuses on the importance of integrating collaboration into classroom practice. In my next post, I'll talk about strategies for successful facilitation of collaborative work...

Learning is a social process, and the learning process is deepened when ideas are challenged and learners are pushed to produce work that surpasses their expectations of what they can do.

That said, working in groups is a continually challenging process. It is important that students aren't forced to work together on projects where collaboration isn't necessary or beneficial to the final product.

Teacher collaboration is the key to future success - we must find more ways to help this process to flourish

Allan Shaw's curator insight, January 23, 2014 4:37 PM

"John Dewey believed that education must be " . . . a process of living and not a preparation for future living." This powerful idea is a helpful reminder of the rich, insightful growth and knowledge that can come from deep, collaborative learning experiences."

Therefore, it could be said true learning is about acting out the theory, of rhetoric and reality remaining close, of adults modelling for young people appropriate learning attitudes and behaviours, as those young people, if forced to choose, will copy what you do rather than do what you say!

What is a Personal Learning Network (PLN)? | Purposeful Pedagogy | Scoop.it
Yes, this blog is about having a Personal Learning Network (PLN). But first, we have to talk superheroes. (Thanks @davidtedu for the tips on growing a PLN!
Dean J. Fusto's insight:

An interesting way to frame the PLN concept. The superhero analogy was helpful and useful in terms of connecting abstract PLN philospohy to concrete ideas.

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity?

Exploring education: Project Based Learning – meaningful action … or merely activity? | Purposeful Pedagogy | Scoop.it

The world is awash with people and groups wishing to reform education.  Some want to go “back to basics” while others want to go “forward to the future”.

Amongst the more progressive groups there is a surprising degree of similarity in what they propose. Thus, the RSA “Opening Minds” project in the UK or the US based P21 or the Apple Classroom of Tomorrow Today all have a high degree of overlap - indeed a Venn diagram of their views would be almost a single circle.
