I found two key points jumped out. First, myths are not always fictional. There is some truth, sometimes a lot, in a myth. With each succeeded generation, we have to figure out is what still makes sense in the story and what needs replacing. This leads to the second point which is that the present state of School is one of binaries and polarities. We are focused on either/or rather than the relational nature of what still works and what does not. Tradition is discarded in total and replaced with whatever the latest fad is.

 

We need more articles which make us think like heretics. The word heretic comes from the ancient Greek meaning "to be able to choose." Do we have choice to be able to choose?

The 7 myths are:

Facts prevent understanding.

Teacher-led instruction is passive.

The 21st century fundamentally changes everything.

You can always just look it up.

You should teach transferable skills.

Projects and activities are the best way to learn.

As teachers, we can make a strategic choice of differentiating in our lessons in order to allow a poor reader to ‘read with their ears’ in class until the time they can read with their eyes. As long as this occurs alongside additional intervention to address their decoding difficulties, we may be improving his or her life chances by providing this opportunity.

Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk and interfaith scholar, offered an inspiring TED presentation on gratitude.  His message was simple yet profound, encouraging all to live gratefully by recognizing that every given moment is a gift.  Brother echoed a familiar sentiment in his talk, “happiness is born from gratitude.”

 

Parents and teachers need to model gratitude. We know that gratitude is a predictor of feeling happy and content. Children learn early that gratitude is an attitude that contributes to their personal happiness and to the happiness of others.  We all share a common desire to be happy, and gratitude shows us the way.

These marketing principles apply easily to the classroom.  The teacher is charged with motivating, exciting and encouraging their audience to ‘buy into’ a lesson or activity.  Using effective marketing strategies promote lesson concepts, project ideas, and themes in exciting and appealing ways.

  Classroom environments, bulletin boards, learning centers and other items can be inviting to students through the use of selective colors.

 

Traditionally, the primary colors--red, yellow, green, and blue--provide the appropriate background for sensory and emotional appeal.  Consider using the colors in unique and intentional ways to evoke a particular emotion or response.  For example: A unit on the environment, geography, engineering, math, and literature can easily use colors in the following ways:

Use colors to name working teamsAssign colors to historical or literary figures studied in a unitIncorporate colors into a legend or keyDesign learning centers

 

The color red conveys strength, passion, and excitement.  Red triggers confidence and courage.

 

The color yellow suggests joy and energy. Yellow draws attention.

 

The color blues evokes trust.  Blue is associated with intelligence.

 

The color green sends a warm and safe message. Green invites growth and freedom.

 

Incorporating specific colors into projects, learning centers, and other learning elements impact students’ responses.  Colors provide multiple ways to be creative and imaginative in the physical, emotional, and intellectual learning environment.
