Ten Questions You Should Ask Before You Flip Your Classroom - jonbergmann.com

Ten Questions You Should Ask Before You Flip Your Classroom - jonbergmann.com | Montessori Education | Scoop.it

As the school year starts, many teachers are wanting to implement flipped learning into their classes. Before you begin, I encourage you to answer each of the questions below. The purpose of the questions is to help teachers BEGIN the process of flipping their class. This is only the first step. Flipped Class 101 can lead to Flipped Learning, which is a second stage of the Flipped Class. Many teachers are asking for some step by step guidelines as they begin.

In this post Jackie Gerstein provides a great list of books that you could use to teach children about the skills and attributes that they need to learn. She states " Children’s books, as they are written and presented as stories, have great potential to explain these often abstract concepts.  There is also evidence that the brain processes stories differently and more powerfully than facts and lectures."

The stories are divided into sections:

* Grit

* Resilience

* Hope & Optimism

* Vision

* Self-Regulation

* Empathy & Global Awareness

There is also a list of books suggested by Tony Wagner in the areas of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Curiosity and Imagination.

Although geared to children some are appropriate for older students.

A Mobile Dilemma

A Mobile Dilemma | Montessori Education | Scoop.it
A Critical 21st Century Skill

Now here we are in the year 2014, and things seem to be changing for many schools.

It would seem that the smartphone is finally getting its due as a computer with telephonic capabilities. Our phones are used as computers even as our computers are now used as phones.

An interesting Nielsen study showed that in March 2012, a majority (50.4 percent) of U.S. mobile subscribers owned smartphones. Mobile devices have also replaced desktop computers as the primary access device to the Internet.

I have often thought about this dilemma, too. We have been talking about mobile learning for years now, but it is still 'a new technology' The opportunities for knowledge sharing and learning are endless, but educators still hold back. The millenials are way ahead already.

Sound advice here on how to build critical thinking skills into the curriculum from an early age to support the growth of the next generation of digital social scientists & citizen researchers. This is great but still leaves us with a problem about how to equip established social researchers with an understanding of the potential & challenges in social media research, especially those who serve on IRBs granting access and clearance via ethics panels to new research projects.

Have you seen an RSA Animate video? Are you interested in learning how to make one or better yet, have your students make one? This post provides an in-depth look at how to go about have your students create an animated video that provides them with the opportunity to  practice 21st century skills (quoted from post below):

* collaborate with one another

* synthesize ideas

* create content

* communicate ideas clearly

* use technology

This activity is designed to have your students create content, providing you with materials to use in future classes as well as helping your current students understand the materiial.

The author, Jordan Collier, provides a detailed five-day plan. Day 1 would have you dividing students into groups of three, assign them a section of a chapter in a textbook, and determine the key facts that need to be taught.
