Though the idea of a jobless world may seem radical, the prediction is based on the natural trajectory of ‘creative destruction’ — that classic economic principle by which established industries are decimated when made irrelevant by new technologies.

What is Coaching?

Over 2,400 years ago, at the height of the Athenian enlightenment, Socrates asserted that teachers should help students to uncover information for themselves. This was a radical departure from the traditional approach of the time, which thought of students as empty vessels and of teachers as dispensers of information. The Socratic philosophy of teaching set the stage for coaching, which aims to unlock and increase potential and learning.

Whether a coach is helping a teacher improve, or a teacher is using the same skills with students in the classroom, coaching allows for a constructionist theory of education. This allows for the individuals to create strategies for themselves.

The Goal of Coaching

Coaching is concerned with long-term skill development rather than with quick fixes or temporary understanding. We define coaches as those who offer inspiration, guidance, training, and modeling, and who enhance others’ abilities through motivation and support (Longenecker & Pinkel, 1997). The goal of a coach is to increase achievement by helping someone:

Find their inner strengths and passions in order to nurture self-worth and identity,Have a voice in their own learning and negotiate collectively with the instructor to create the goals and objectives,Passionately engage in talking content to increase memory retention and fuel motivation to learn, and,Use their inner talents to bring their work to the highest level of scholarship attainable.

Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck’s best-selling book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, started a revolution in most of the schools that I work in this year, and for good reason: her findings are inspiring teachers and students and parents alike to rethink what it means to be a successful learner and what dispositions we must cultivate in order to make that vision a reality.

This a complex study, and reflecting as we read brings interesting considerations to the surface. For instance, how can we stop perseverating on performance in order to cultivate a growth mindset?

How can teachers best integrate technology into their lesson plans? This post looks at 10 questions we should consider asking ourselves, and provides suggestions of tools to consider using that will help us seamlessly integrate technology. Below are the first four questions.

1. How am I activating into my students' prior knowledge?

2. How am I presenting information to students in an engaging way?

3. How am I collecting, disseminating, and annotating student work?

4. What opportunities and resources am I giving my students for practice?

Integrating technology should become a component of our lesson design. As you review the additional questions you will find that not all apply to every lesson you teach. Think about your objectives and then select the question(s) most applicable.

As you look at the suggested tools in the post make sure that you try using the ones you choose. There is nothing more frustrating than to use a tool as a teacher, and you know it works...but when the student logs in the tool is blocked due to permissions. My lesson learned...I must test each and every tool, so that I know how to use it and to make sure students also have access.

In light of the many advantages that integrating edtech into the general curriculum offers, to continue to deny students these opportunities seems like a hard pill to swallow. Edtech is no longer in the early adopters zone; no longer in the testing zone. It is well and truly here, and senior leadership not only has to accept such a fate, but take the bull by the horns and truly embrace it for what it is worth. 

For the sake of all its students, edtech must become an integral part of a school’s pedagogy.

This article shows the different customs on gestures or body language in the world. What we might do is disrespectful in another country. For example, even some as simple as crossing your legs while sitting is common in North America and some European countries. However, it is viewed disrespectful in Asia and the Middle East.

Career and Technical Education programs (often called vocational schools) have their students learn by doing. Learning by doing is known as experiential learning. Why is experiential learning beneficial? Below are the three reasons described in this post.

Reason 1: Experiential education promotes positive attitudes towards learning.

Reason 2: Experiential education provides true-to-life experience that enhances career exploration.

Reason 3: Experiential education helps create more engaged members of the workforce.

Mr Laing was my year 8 Maths teacher. He was a rare breed indeed. He helped me, and my fellow pimple-clad teens, find mathematics interesting. Intermittently, he would betray a deep excitement about a mathematics problem or reveal that he had woken up in the middle of the night with an answer to some mathematics concept. We were incredulous – being excited by mathematics was anathema. Soon enough, incredulity became intrigue. Over time, he made us think that such interest might be possible for us too.

I believe it comes from a background of being an adventure educator, and even though it was not labeled as such, the adventure educator embraces a growth mindset when working with participants. The underlying tenet of adventure education is “You are capable of so much more than you can even imagine. I believe in you and your capabilities; and I will set up the conditions for you to develop and amplify that same belief in yourself.
