The National School Reform Faculty promotes the use of Critical Friends Groups, a specific type of professional learning community, to empower educators and have a direct positive impact on students, classrooms and student performance.

Everything you could want to know about Critical Friends Group:  A  a professional learning community consisting of approximately 8-12 educators who come together voluntarily at least once a month for about 2 hours. Group members are committed to improving their practice through collaborative learning.

I am looking more deeply into this as I contemplate how to do my work (supporting educator's) better.

Terrified of presenting in front of an audience? Or just a little shy? How to take your public speaking ability and slide presentations from uncomfortable to awesome.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

This is all you need for a truly great presentation:

One big ideaThree key pointsOne compelling storyOne idea per slide (and no more than six words)One clear call to action

BUT I would add that this is just about building conceptual understanding.  Inquiry must happen next so that people can incorporate new information into their own personal ecology.

What Does It Mean To Understand?

What Does It Mean To Understand? | Teaching and Learning with Teachers | Scoop.it
“... Instruction begins when you, the teacher, learn from the learner, put yourself in his place so that you may understand what he understands and in the way he understands it....” - Soren Kierkeg...
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

Getting to deeper levels of knowledge is vital for true learning to occur.  The Teaching for Understanding Framework from the work of Harvard's Project Zero is a model teachers can use to do just that.  Engagement is ensured when students are able to use what they know in meaningful ways to demonstrate understanding.

Teaching for Understanding framework is just loose enough for teachers to customize it and make it their own.

5 Ways To Support Teachers Skeptical Of Technology

5 Ways To Support Teachers Skeptical Of Technology | Teaching and Learning with Teachers | Scoop.it
For some, the technology rich classroom is easy to justify. Once you have made the transition and seen the benefits, it is easy to weigh them against the potential risks and worries about the problems resulting from having a room full of devices.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

great article!

My favorite tips:

'Suggest that teachers implement technology into a lesson that IS effective in order to show them how it can help them to be even more so.'

"Teachers may be more likely to move forward if they view this as the next step on a continuing journey, and not a new journey altogether."

"When teachers are struggling to implement technology or any other initiative in their classroom often what they need is a chance to talk about what they want to accomplish, and have an instructor guide them to possible solutions."

and

"Demonstrating clearly how technology will increase effectiveness is the single greatest way to win converts and give you common ground to stand on."

Engagement doesn't happen because our story is so compelling. It happens when the people we’re addressing see themselves in the story. And it’s much easier for that to happen when we put them into the story from the get-go.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

At his mini session at Project Zero's Summer Institute 2013, Daniel Wilson facilitated learning around:  "Effective Professional Learning Communities:
Supporting Learning in and Staff Rooms and Classrooms".  This chart explains the language we use while working in collaborative groups.

As we attempt to truly collaborate, it is important to pay attention to the language.  Conditional language that is open to possibility is preferred to assertive language that factual and delivered with certainty.

Look at the chart to see how you can be more collaborative and progressive with the language you use while working in groups.
