Education as it should be - passion-based.
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

"In this standards driven world, educators might argue that they do not have the time to do such a project with students.  I could easily identify the content-area standards addressed with this assignment – language arts, oral communication, visual arts, technology skills.  The more important outcomes, in my perspective, of such a project are increased confidence, development of self-regulation skills, enhanced sense of personal identity, and increased feelings of significance – that they have been been seen and heard."

Creating at the end of the learning, to allow learners to share passions and discoveries is a powerful way to teach and engage.

Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

Autonomy DOES breed change.

I love how Eric structured this entire endeavor. I can only believe it effectively engaged all of his staff.  Change doesn't come easy, but Eric shows how leaders can, in fact, make it happen.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 10, 7:04 PM

We do need autonomy for teachers and it takes courage for a principal to just let teachers go. Few have it and it is inspiring to read this post.

The Neuroscience At The Heart Of Learning And Leading

The Neuroscience At The Heart Of Learning And Leading | Teaching and Learning with Teachers | Scoop.it
Joshua Freedman (@eqjosh) shares the science behind what's going on inside your head. Emotional intelligence, he says, is the difference that makes the difference.

Via David Hain
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

'One of the central challenges in learning and leading is the ability for people to connect, to collaborate, and to find the common ground needed to work out the intense polarizations that lead to so many of the terrible headlines we see. While humans have a fierce independence, we are actually social animals, and mirror neurons are evidence of this interdependence.'

Bottom line:  "In short, when we work with human nature, and we take care of basic emotional needs, people perform better. Thus it’s a “no brainer” that we learn more about the brain and how to use this cutting edge science to inform the way we lead and live."

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions

Self-Directed Learning Well Explained and 27 Actions | Teaching and Learning with Teachers | Scoop.it

TeachThought.com has a series of posts about self-directed learning by Terry Heick and the staff, well worth a read! “

“Learning is most effective when it’s personalised; it means something to the learner. That happens when people feel they are participants and investors in their own learning, shaping what and how they learn, and able to articulate its value to them.” — Leadbeater, Charles

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, March 25, 2:16 PM

It is interesting how few classroom teachers and administrators are aware of what self-directed learning is. SDL is an imperative for our children.

Avery's curator insight, March 25, 11:56 PM

My Thoughts:

You can't teach someone how to learn. You can give them helpful tips and advice, but a single structure for education is not going to work for everyone. It's so much harder for people to learn their true potential, to reach their goals, when they're only shown a single path to them. You show them the path through the forest, but what if there's a rock face nearby that also leads up to where they want to go, and what if they happen to be a fantastic rock climber? It just makes more sense to show someone a map if you can, instead of directing them towards only one path.

NovaNow | The Time to Innovate is Now | Teaching and Learning with Teachers | Scoop.it
Mary Perfitt-Nelson's insight:

NovaNow is a conference for educators of all kinds to share their best ideas, plans, and dreams about learning. It is also a place where thoughtful questioning and critiques are encouraged. Presentations are not given, but rather conversations are led around learning. NovaNow is a conversational conference based on the model of Educon in Philadelphia.

NovaNow will be a series of conversations about learning. Core beliefs include:

Learning should be student-centered and inquiry-based.Learning should focus on collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.Learning is enhanced when meaning is constructed by learners in their community.Technology supports learning, but should not be the focus.Learning should not and cannot be contained in schools and buildingsSept 27-28 in Grand Rapids, MI

Training officers have to always think of how best to overcome the challenge of having to train and retrain their workers, and yet still have to answer repeat questions later.
