Can we read with our ears?

Can we read with our ears? | Teaching and Learning Practice | Scoop.it

Many students with weak decoding skills can read: with their ears. As teachers, we can make a strategic choice of differentiating in our lessons in order to allow a poor reader to ‘read with their ears’ in class until the time they can read with their eyes. As long as this occurs alongside additional intervention to address their decoding difficulties, we may be improving his or her life chances by providing this opportunity.

Using all the resources available to us, while we systematically teach children the skills they need.

An interesting article - relevant to literacy skills and accessibility. Helping pupils to be able to access the curriculum despite poor reading skills seems to be a no-brainer.

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking

Catchbox Is A Throwable Microphone To Get The Audience Talking | Teaching and Learning Practice | Scoop.it

Catchbox is a new throwable microphone designed to liven up audience participation, and in turn reduce the faffing around that seems to occur whenever a conference turns to questions from the audience.

The brightly coloured padded cube houses a wireless microphone that doesn’t mind being tossed across a room or passed from person-to-person crowd surfing-style. In fact, it’s actively encouraged. That’s because, along with being able to sustain being dropped, the device has been engineered to automatically mute the sound when flying through the air or if it falls.

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter

How Digital Writing Is Making Kids Smarter | Teaching and Learning Practice | Scoop.it

Writing used to be strictly an in-school activity. Now, kids do 40 percent of their writing outside of school. Called “life writing,” young adults’ social writing spans texts, tweets, social media, and blogs -- and all of it’s making kids more literate.

Histoire de recadrer les pessismistes et passéistes: l'écriture est plus que jamais vivace!

BI Media Specialists's curator insight, November 1, 2013 4:28 PM

I can't believe kids are doing more than 40% of their writing outside of school. "Life writing" may make grammar teachers cringe, but at least students are engaging with others and sharing ideas in this format.

Catherine Byrd Bushby's curator insight, June 21, 10:13 PM

That's why we need to bring social writing into school.

We're About to Tell You the Secret to Creativity, and You May NOT Want to Sit Down - InformED

We're About to Tell You the Secret to Creativity, and You May NOT Want to Sit Down - InformED | Teaching and Learning Practice | Scoop.it

The study found that walking indoors or outdoors similarly boosted creative inspiration. The act of walking itself, and not the environment, was the main factor. A person walking indoors – on a treadmill in a room facing a blank wall – produced twice as many creative responses compared to a person sitting down.

Anne Whisken's curator insight, May 8, 7:51 PM

'It’s important to note that, according to the study, the type of creativity affected by walking is associated with “divergent,” rather than “convergent,” thinking. In other words, walking benefits creative brainstorming but not the kind of focused thinking required for single, correct answers.'

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of our daily lives for the last decades. The dramatic adaptation of ICT has in turn called for education reforms at various levels with a view to creating an enabling educational environment for next generations to effectively function in the digital era. Therefore, teachers’ capacity of integrating ICT into their teaching practices plays a critical role in achieving the goals of the education reform.
