Educational Leadership | Leveraging Teacher Leadership | EL Study Guide

Educational Leadership | Leveraging Teacher Leadership | EL Study Guide | Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it
Teachers lead learning in their classrooms every day, but teacher leadership often extends beyond the classroom. Teachers lead their colleagues in professional learning and growth. They lead their communities in bringing change to schools. They might focus on leading within their schools and localities, or they might use social media to share their ideas with fellow educators around the world. But such leadership can be a challenge.

Administrators and policymakers need to listen to teacher voices and give teachers room to lead. This issue of Educational Leadership looks at how teachers are leading today and considers how schools can best leverage the leadership skills of teachers.

One again the redoubtable Matthew Wells turns his mind to how to best integrate current trends into a classroom context, in this case in the area of coding. Not only does Matthew provide a simple framework looking at some of the apps that can be used in the classroom ranging from Beginner to Pro but he also engages in a discussion around each of these stages. Pleasingly he also points out that much of the leadership in learning the mechanics of these apps can be ceded to students allowing the teacher to focus on how to maximise learning outcomes.

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (And How To Correct Them) | Reality

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (And How To Correct Them) | Reality | Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it

Focusing on iPad-versus.-laptop comparisons stifles the ability to see how the iPad facilitates student-centered learning. iPads are devices meant to compliment computers, not replace them.

So, people who seek equivalent functionality become frustrated, and fail to realize the intrinsic benefits and features of the iPad’s native design.

Instead, schools should focus their energies on what iPads do best to engender active learning. iPads enable students to kinesthetically connect with their work (especially important for young learners). These tactile elements – using fingers to zoom, rotate in, pinch close, or swipe across – as well as increasingly interactive and immersive apps, facilitate hands-on learning.

There are for sure many other characteristics; nevertheless, those ones mentioned are pretty narrow and interesting. "A tech teacher integrates digital skills into every day life" This argument can be supported by the idea that we use technology in order to cover a need. Every day, as human beings and teachers, we face needs that can be overtaken with the use of technology, but also being aware of how to use it wisely. This is how a competent teacher  who knows about tech literacy becomes a trendy and functional teacher without saying that "traditional" education does not work anymore.
