"The kindergarten student, a shy, Mandarin-speaking five-year-old immigrant in the tiny community of Sangudo, Alta., had barely spoken a word during the first three months of class. So her teacher was surprised one day last year when the girl struck up a conversation. The subject of their animated discussion? An image on the screen of an iPad."
"We recognize the value of technology in the classroom, so on the heels of our popular article, 20 Amazing iPad apps for Educators, we have compiled a list of the top 11 apps for math teachers and students. The functionality ranges from a platform for lectures all the way to basic math flash cards - and everything in between!"
"Here is a set of some wonderful workflows sheets Greg Swanson has recently created from conversations with with Yr 4, 5 and 6 kids. These sheets document how students perform learning tasks using their iPads. The good thing about these materials is that they encourage students self reflect on both the process of how they learn and what they learn. Generously enough, Greg has provided these worksheets free for us to download and use with our students and here is what he said about them :"
Games are very important for learning and James Paul Gee has empirically proved this in his wonderful book " What Video Games Have to Teach Us about Learning and Literacy". Gee argues that games, particularly video games, require the players to learn and think in ways at which they are not adept. He further states that games provide a life enhancing experience for learners and they also revolutionize the routinized ways of learning through fusing learning and play. You can learn more about Gee's book in this post I have published a few months ago.
Regarding the importance of games and why they are good for learning, I am sharing with you the graphic below which visualizes some of the pluses of playing games for learners. Check it out and share with us what you think of it.
"A couple of days ago I posted here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning about iPad apps for playing math games and I received several other suggestions of new apps which I will compile in a new list to be published this week. One of the readers has also sent me a link to this wonderful symbaloo page full of math web games for young kids. It features over 40 math games covering a wide range of mathematical topics including : "counting, sorting, matching, and number identification". This resource is first shared by Mattbgomez which is one of my favourite edtech blogs."

"I visited with a K-3 librarian today who recently received a cart of iPads at her school for teachers to check out and use with students. She was unsure how to share videos the students create and save to their iPad camera rolls, however, with apps like iMovie, Puppet Pals, and Sock Puppets. In this post I’ll summarize my recommendations to her, which involve setting up a special Gmail account “for the cart” as well as a YouTube channel teachers and students can publish to with the free YouTube Capture app."
