10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment

10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment | Teacher Gary | Scoop.it

D"Wherever we are, we’d all like to think our classrooms are “intellectually active” places. Progressive learning (like our 21st Century Model, for example) environments. Highly effective and conducive to student-centered learning. But what does that mean?

The reality is, there is no single answer because teaching and learning are awkward to consider as single events or individual 'things'..."

What are the characteristics of an effective learning environment? Read on...

Ruby Day's curator insight, June 18, 2014 3:24 PM

These criteria really outline some solid  principles that should direct our planning and thus be evident in our learning environments. Principles such as: student enquiry, work readiness, personalised learning, flexibility, authentic and transparent assessment. I like the focus on critical thinking here :)

Sue Alexander's curator insight, June 21, 2014 5:02 PM

Great scoop Beth. I love the goal of "intellectually active" classrooms.

Free Technology for Teachers: 10 Sites and Apps for Vocabulary and Spelling Practice | Teacher Gary | Scoop.it
Last night I watched the conclusion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. A recap of the finals is available on the Associated Press YouTube channel. Like many others who watched the finals, I have to admit that there were some new-to-me words in the final rounds. That reminded me that I have a bunch of sites and apps in my archives that can help students learn new vocabulary words and practice spelling new words.

Making the Jump From Engaging Students to Empowering Makers

Making the Jump From Engaging Students to Empowering Makers  | Teacher Gary | Scoop.it

Mr. Flynn was one of my favorite teachers, who just happened to teach one of my least favorite subjects: Math. Math had never come easily to me the way many English and Social Studies classes had, and so I often retreated from trying and just did enough to get by. By all accounts, Mr. Flynn should never have taken an interest in my learning journey. I spent most of his Pre-Calculus class passing notes or laughing at others goofing around. Then one day we came into class and Mr. Flynn was lying down on the back table. It seemed like a joke, but eventually we found out he had seriously hurt his back. He taught the rest of that class period lying on the back table, pointing to the chalkboard and using a yard stick to make changes.

The Great Make: Rocketry Round-Up | Make: DIY Projects and Ideas for Makers

The Great Make: Rocketry Round-Up | Make: DIY Projects and Ideas for Makers | Teacher Gary | Scoop.it
Many a Make: reader, especially those of us of a certain age, cut our teeth on building and flying model rockets. This one hobby required you to gain at least a basic aptitude in model construction (and all of the skill sets involved there), basic design and engineering skills, understanding the science and aerodynamics of flight, rudimentary electronics, ballistics, and much more.

Given the importance of rocketry for many of us in developing as makers, it’s no wonder that Make: has covered a ton of rocketry projects of varying stripes over the years, from kiddie water and stomp rockets to serious high-powered efforts. Here is a selection of some of these projects and articles from the past ten years.
