What Gets in the Way of Listening

What Gets in the Way of Listening | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it

As your role grows in scale and influence, so too must your ability to listen. But listening is one of the toughest skills to master — and requires uncovering deeper barriers within oneself.

Sharrock's insight:

Think about this for training of new teachers and administrators. Teachers are learning leaders so may find these tips particularly helpful.

Dylann Roof Represents Too Many Of Us

Dylann Roof Represents Too Many Of Us | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
The United States is a great nation because it is a free nation, and unlike dictatorships, free nations acknowledge our flaws and try to rectify them. There is no contradiction in saying most Americans are good people but too many of us hate, and that even non-violent expressions of that hate, like flying a flag, encourages those prone to violence. It’s easy, and necessary, to take down the flag and prosecute Roof. Given our natural desire to think him an aberration, it will be harder, but just as essential, to admit that there are more of him out there and take whatever steps are necessary to confront these darker demons of our nature.

Sharrock's insight:
This article, and articles like this one, helps us formulate questions and thoughts around the problem of inequality and racism. It also picks apart arguments that gloss over uncomfortable truths at the hearts of such appeals to historical and cultural value that often depend on revisions of history.

Bigger Than Booger: Curtis Armstrong On Thriving Through Four Decades In Hollywood

Bigger Than Booger: Curtis Armstrong On Thriving Through Four Decades In Hollywood | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
THE ACCIDENTAL MOVIE STAR
“I didn’t really plan on any of this,” Armstrong says. “My intention was never to do movies or television. I was just thinking of plays. But as I was doing plays that got more attention in New York, I started to get auditions for films. I went on them expecting I wouldn’t get them–and until Risky Business, I didn’t. But there wasn’t really a plan. I always look at Risky Business as the beginning of an entire career that came out of left field.
Sharrock's insight:
Stories like these are powerful for school counselors to share. Kids need to know that preparation and study are very important, but that luck plays a part in success as well.

A Delta Pilot Just Did Something Great, but the Airline Chose Not to Recognize Him #pbis #pbs

With all the negative press, you would think an airline would jump at the opportunity to share a positive story...but no.
Sharrock's insight:
This article could be shared with PBIS committee and with the general staff in your school. What are some reasons it is powerful to recognize someone doing something as simple as explaining a situation? Why did the pilot downplay something that was so out of the ordinary from the author's experience? How is it that some people can do things they think are no big deal while others recognize that same action as nearly heroic?

From the article: "A few minutes later, the gate agent announced that the flight would be further delayed. Groans. Grumbling. "Then the captain walked up to the desk and got on the loudspeaker. He said: "I'm sorry, but due to a maintenance issue we've decided to switch to another plane. While it's not a big issue, our biggest priority is your safety, and we've decided to take that plane out of service until it's 100 percent ready to go. I've been on the phone working to get another plane and they assure me it won't take long. Hopefully we can get everything worked out within 30 minutes. I really appreciate your patience and promise that we will keep you updated. "No one groaned. No one grumbled."

When Is An Act Of Violence An Act Of Terrorism?

When Is An Act Of Violence An Act Of Terrorism? | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
The word terrorism is a tricky one. That's because, as one linguist says, "terrorism itself, whatever that is" lives in a place between crime and war. "Although acts of war, acts of crime and acts of terror can look very much alike on the surface, they have very different motives, very different reasons for being, and I think that's why people are confused," she says. "They look alike on the surface; they're different underneath."

Is It Just Me? When Learners Think They Can't Because Others Can

Is It Just Me? When Learners Think They Can't Because Others Can | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
If we truly want to help students develop a growth mindset, we need to dispel the myth that people are born with great talent or that true geniuses don’t have to work hard. In order to effectively coach students, educators need a deep understanding that learning is a transferable skill. We can all benefit from reflecting on how we have improved our abilities in the past and transfer those same principles to other areas. Students need to learn strategies to process through the events that are happening around them. When they witness easy success, educators can help students hear their fixed mindset thoughts and give them the tools to respond with a growth mindset voice. This will help them stay focused on their learning process instead of being distracted by what others are doing, and ultimately grow as learners.

Sharrock's insight:
"Students often don’t understand transfer of learning. They don’t know what past experiences other students have had that help them pick up new skills quickly. They may not be aware of what background knowledge other students are connecting to the new situation. For example, what if the 8 year old Roberto knew that his physical education classmate had been playing baseball for 4 years, and routinely engages in other hand-eye coordination activities such as ping pong and basketball at home? What if Caleb would have known that the girl sitting next to him in math class, has been using fractions to make recipes at home with her 2 older siblings. What if Makena would have known that her dynamic speaking classmate had been doing readings at her church since she was 6 years old?" (from the article)

This is a multi-dimensional, interdisciplinary topic. Although artificial intelligence is based on technology, people in any subject can debate. AI can be a political, economic, scientific/engineering, as well as an ELA topic when exploring the spiritual and social impacts in narrative.

What Is Justice and When Is It Served?

What Is Justice and When Is It Served? | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
"One of the gravest mistakes people make is equating law with concepts of justice and fairness. In fact, the following phrase is engraved above the entrance of the United States Supreme Court building: 'Equal Justice Under Law.' It is important to note that it does not say 'Equal Justice' because that is limited to the context of the 'Law.' In other words, a court’s role is to resolve cases and controversies in accordance with the law, and to interpret the law, if necessary. By the way, 'fairness' is a synonym for 'justice.'

In order to conclude that 'Equal Justice' and 'Equal Justice Under Law' are the same, one must believe that laws are based upon concepts of fundamental fairness.... The law is the law and justice is justice. If the law is not necessarily just, how can 'Equal Justice Under Law' be just or fair?...

You may have noticed that I did not refer to 'Equal Justice.' My reason for removing the term 'Equal' is that whether or not 'Justice' is applied 'Equally' has been an ongoing source of debate throughout history."
Sharrock's insight:
This statement is important to reflect on for high school students and older students as well:

"One of the gravest mistakes people make is equating law with concepts of justice and fairness. In fact, the following phrase is engraved above the entrance of the United States Supreme Court building: 'Equal Justice Under Law.' It is important to note that it does not say 'Equal Justice' because that is limited to the context of the 'Law.' My reason for removing the term 'Equal' is that whether or not 'Justice' is applied 'Equally' has been an ongoing source of debate throughout history."

This distinction is an important one. That umbrella statement "under the law" means that knowing the law is important for justice when involving the court system. The ideas of the insanity plea and certain conventions in the court room have a limited status. Common sense does not apply. This is difficult to grasp.

What Do We Relinquish When We Say 'I Forgive You'?

What Do We Relinquish When We Say 'I Forgive You'? | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it

Forgiveness need not mean forgetting or acquiescing, but is it necessary to effect change?

"The more I listen to the passionate debate on this topic, the more I think that “I forgive you” has little to do with the transgressor. We forgive to find peace, or at least a release from a constant, corrosive rage — however righteous — that would otherwise consume us. Thankfully, I have few relationships in my own life that require reconciliation. But when I think about one that does, I realize that for me, saying “Forgive me” or “I forgive you” is essentially saying “I want things to be better between us.” It is an expression of hope." (from the article)

Sharrock's insight:
Teachers hoping to being a Restorative Justice program in their school might find uses for this article. It might also be useful for Participation in Government or Civics classes at the secondary level. In the context of a class, it can be balanced against the purposes of the Judicial Branch of government and the court system.

New Management Research Analyzes How Recognition Affects Retention

The recognition/retention connection - Despite the fact that recognition is chronically in short supply, it plays an important role in keeping employees satisfied and productive.  The survey report states, "We found a strong relationship (r = 0.56) between how valued an employee feels at work and the likelihood that they would reapply to their job."  In other words, the data showed a solid correlation between employees' feeling valued and their overall feelings about their job situation.  Not surprising, but it's always useful to put quantitative data behind qualitative scenarios.

Here's What Happened When I Complimented Everyone I Met for an Entire Day #pbis #pbs

If you take on this challenge, here's some advice: Don't go to the grocery store.
Sharrock's insight:
For school counselors and teachers hoping to increase buy-in for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS/PBS), this is a great challenge. The change in the culture of the school, or in any organization, is noticeable. The powerful impact of a free acknowledgement or recognition works wonders on your attitude towards your organization's environment. It is important to include administrators and teachers, in addition to whatever students you can recruit, make sure it's to everybody, not just to students and friends.

If you eat corn or wheat in the United States, there's a good chance it was grown with the help of paleowater left over from the last ice age when glaciers covered the Great Plains. And as neat and healthy as that sounds -- paleowater! -- this is not good news.
The Ogallal Aquifer is one of the largest aquifers in the world, running beneath parts of eight states in the central US. And it is this giant, ancient aquifer that is being sucked dry faster than rain can keep up. Put another way, we've nearly used up a million-year-old source of water in the 100 or so years we've been tapping into it for irrigation.

Below some of the world’s most expensive real estate, in the heart of Silicon Valley, pipes and pumps suck thousands of gallons of contaminated water every hour from vast underground toxic pools.

Giant industrial filters trap droplets of dangerous chemicals at the surface, all in the hope of making the water drinkable again and protecting the workers of tech giants such as Google and Symantec from toxic vapors. Hot as Hell: Firefighting foam heats up coal fire debate in Centralia, Pa. | EARTH Magazine

Coal fires are a problem all over the world. Such fires endanger nearby communities, waste precious resources and produce tons of noxious and greenhouse gases. Centralia is not the only coal fire burning in the United States. In fact, it’s just one of 38 burning in Pennsylvania alone. The hundreds of underground fires in the United States, from Pennsylvania to Alabama to Wyoming, combined with the thousands thought to be burning in China, India and elsewhere, are one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide and pollution on Earth.
