"In our history the formation of the United States in her early periods were precarious," Perry tells io9. "Not only were the British poised to retake the South and defeat the insurgents militarily, pre-Constitution the Articles of Confederation created a weak government that couldn't even easily collect taxes. In this world I've created, the AoC are never replaced, and the Union slowly devolves into what you see here."

In this latest project, Penny extends his alt-history speculations beyond the cartographic by "imagining what various items may have looked like from this universe. Things like coins, banknotes, posters, etc. Through this I hope to tell a story of a home very different from our own."
Sharrock's insight:
Social Studies teachers and English Language Teachers and some other subject learning experts could develop a thematic unit around this idea. Using SPRITE (social-political-religious-intellectual-technology-education) for the 11th and 12 graders in the US system, they could explore how different the US could have been. Or this could be a high level elective. The success of this unit would depend on design thinking principles and practices.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) plays a key role in children's academic readiness and success. Students with strong SEL skills participate more in the classroom, have more positive attitudes about and involvement with school, are more accepted by classmates, and are given more instruction and positive feedback by teachers. Without SEL skills, young children are more likely to dislike school and perform poorly on academic tasks, and later experience grade retention and dropout (Raver & Knitzer, 2002).

In the same way that assessment is important for understanding students' academic learning, it is also important for understanding students' social and emotional learning. A well-designed SEL program includes not only evidence-based curricula and instruction (along with support for teachers), but also clear goals and benchmarks (i.e., standards), and tools for universal and targeted screening and progress monitoring.

A quality virtual private network should also be provided so that users have access to all of the applications and files they need to do their jobs, regardless of their locations.

Surely, we all spend time attending meetings and conference calls, reading and responding to messages that could be used more productively. That’s frustrating.

However—and this is a crucial point—we don’t know those interactions will be fruitless until we actually have them.

I was confused. Most of these green-bottle beers have a similar taste. But what about clear glass beer? Newcastle doesn’t taste like this? What about Bud Select 55? I am not ashamed to say that I also drink that beer. It is perfect for tailgating at a football game or sitting by the pool. But it doesn’t have that same taste of a green-bottle beer.

Here is my brother’s reply to this question (Eric Allain):

“Certain light sensitive compounds present in hops are the culprit of the skunky aroma which lead to the production of 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol (MBT). MBT has an extremely low flavor threshold and is very similar to the compound produced by skunks for defense.

Amber bottles block much of the wavelengths of light (~300-500nm) that lead to this photoxidation but green and clear bottles do not.

Corona IS skunky … this is why they serve it often with a lime to mask the smell. Also, the ‘skunkiness’ has become accepted in Corona as just part of the flavor.

Some of the macrobrew companies (Miller-Coors etc) use a hop extract that has been stabilized so that light will not lead to MBT production. Therefore they can use clear bottles without worry.

Since the MBT is derived from hop components, different beers with different amounts or types of hops may lead to varying levels of light induced MBT.

This is an experiment some secondary chemistry teachers might try to reproduce on a weekend or over the summer break. It's also a great reminder that science is fun! What are some ways you might improve the information quality of this experiment?

This would be a good article to share with students in social studies elective classes that deal with campaigns and US government (voting). The teacher could start with a question about politicians keeping their campaign promises after voted in to office. After discussion, teacher could introduce research project that combines research validity and verification, fact-checking websites, and "changing conditions" having an impact on following through. They may also explore what "good faith" means and how it applies to these kinds of questions. 

The teacher could decide to split researchers into pairs or small groups. They could research this question regarding congressional candidates, senate, and other offices where candidates must be voted in. I don't know if research is available so teacher might want to check with school librarian to check if project can be carried through for congressional or senate candidates.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in children is a psychiatric disorder that can persist into adulthood. Students with ODD have an underdeveloped conscience and poor relationship skills. They display a great deal of aggression and purposefully annoy others. The actions of these children seriously interfere with their functioning at home and at school. Being defiant and argumentative are typical ways children ages two to three and young adolescents behave; however, students with ODD exhibit a pattern of these behaviors beyond age three and throughout their school years.

Mission | The Pluralism Project

What is Pluralism? 

 The plurality of religious traditions and cultures has come to characterize every part of the world today. But what is pluralism? Here are four points to begin our thinking: 

 First, pluralism is not diversity alone, but the energetic engagement with diversity. Diversity can and has meant the creation of religious ghettoes with little traffic between or among them. Today, religious diversity is a given, but pluralism is not a given; it is an achievement. Mere diversity without real encounter and relationship will yield increasing tensions in our societies. 

Second, pluralism is not just tolerance, but the active seeking of understanding across lines of difference. Tolerance is a necessary public virtue, but it does not require Christians and Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and ardent secularists to know anything about one another. Tolerance is too thin a foundation for a world of religious difference and proximity. It does nothing to remove our ignorance of one another, and leaves in place the stereotype, the half-truth, the fears that underlie old patterns of division and violence. In the world in which we live today, our ignorance of one another will be increasingly costly. 

 Third, pluralism is not relativism, but the encounter of commitments. The new paradigm of pluralism does not require us to leave our identities and our commitments behind, for pluralism is the encounter of commitments. It means holding our deepest differences, even our religious differences, not in isolation, but in relationship to one another. 

Fourth, pluralism is based on dialogue. The language of pluralism is that of dialogue and encounter, give and take, criticism and self-criticism. Dialogue means both speaking and listening, and that process reveals both common understandings and real differences. Dialogue does not mean everyone at the “table” will agree with one another. Pluralism involves the commitment to being at the table — with one’s commitments. —Diana L. Eck, 2006

US History teachers at the secondary school level, as well as Global Studies and Participation in Government teachers, should explore this site and try to answer the big questions posed in this site. 

Although this site focuses on religious diversity in the United States, it is also about answering the bigger questions about citizenship. It asks who Americans are when they say, "One nation under God"? So often, people make comments in social networks and in face to face conversations about the endangering of Christian beliefs and make claims that the USA is a Christian nation. They dismiss or forget the USA's exceptionalism is linked to its pluralism. For the country to be "great", it must uphold and appreciate this history of inclusion, but must also include the ability to dialogue--not just talk for or talk at others--but to actually dialogue. Diana Eck explains: "Dialogue means both speaking and listening, and that process reveals both common understandings and real differences. Dialogue does not mean everyone at the “table” will agree with one another. Pluralism involves the commitment to being at the table — with one’s commitments." 

I learned about this site from a Great Courses audiobook by Prof. Charles Kimball http://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/comparative-religion.html. As I listen to the first few discs, it occurs to me that Marshall McLuhan's descriptions of violence and tribalism are manifesting. We have to educate more people with messages from the Pluralism Project to drive back the tide of fear and intolerance.
