4 Types of Innovation (and how to approach them)

4 Types of Innovation (and how to approach them) | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
Innovation’s greatest challenge is to come up with a clear framework for defining innovation problems and approaches that are most likely to resolve them.
Sharrock's insight:

This simply breaks down innovation into four kinds of innovation. It adds visual component. Innovation: breakthrough, sustaining, basic research, and disruptive. Maybe there are more, but at least it makes the discussion of "innovation" more inclusive.

Creative Ways To Manage Paperwork Load For Special Education Teachers

Creative Ways To Manage Paperwork Load For Special Education Teachers | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
In a cramped office down the hall, four filing cabinets loom over Kim Beck, the school’s special education director. Inside the cabinets, Beck keeps tons of paperwork on all special education students, required by law, showing they are receiving the help they need.

“I try to take most of that paperwork load off of the teachers, so it allows them to teach during the day,” Beck says.

And she does much more. She tests students to see if they need special education services, or if they’re ready to move on. It’s also her job to schedule meetings with parents.

Why Are We So Afraid of Sharks? It Could Be the Background Music

Why Are We So Afraid of Sharks? It Could Be the Background Music | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
Predictably, participants who watched shark footage over ominous music were more likely to regard sharks negatively than those who watched the same video clip set to uplifting music or to no music at all.

Sharrock's insight:
Music can create context. Context is key. Teachers might use this resource to explore how we can subtly bias learners and an audience even while presenting factual information.

French Words with New Meanings in English

French Words with New Meanings in English | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
Thanks to the Norman Conquest, and to the long dominance of France in European culture and politics, almost half the words and phrases in the English lexicon (including that of its American variety) are derived from French. The list below consists of words used in American English that acquired one or more senses distinct from that or those of the French words from which they are descended. After each term, the American English meaning(s) is/are listed, followed in parentheses by the French meaning(s).

Sharrock's insight:
This list is useful for informing English Language Learners as well as advanced learners that even though we may be bilingual, don't assume that the English use of the French term carries the same meaning as the French. This also might be true of Spanish and other languages. Can lead to discussions about the necessity of defining terms (online or in a dictionary), but may be useful beyond English classes. For example, in the sciences, it is often true that everyday English terms are used differently in reports and articles about scientific studies, which is the case with words like creativity, imagination. anxiety, and other terms.

1968 was a year of triumphs and tragedies. While America reached new heights by introducing the first 747 and orbiting the moon, all was not well down on Earth. The United States lost a Navy intelligence ship and two proponents of peace -- the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.

Ohio Now Requires Criminal Convictions For Many Civil Forfeiture Cases | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed a bill today that will require a criminal conviction before law enforcement can permanently confiscate property for many civil forfeiture cases. Only 11 other states have similar or stricter requirements.

“Civil forfeiture is one of the most serious assaults on due process and private property rights in the United States today,” Institute for Justice Legislative Counsel Lee McGrath said in a statement. “Ohio’s new law should protect many from this abuse of power.”

Mental and Emotional Karate

Mental and Emotional Karate | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it

Most school approaches to bullying are what I call outside-in approaches. Teachers and schools officials basically attempt to appeal to their students' sense of decency and right and wrong. They ask them to not "bully" their fellow classmates. Students are rightfully also made aware of the potentially tragic consequences of "bullying". This is usually backed up with a system of consequences, extra vigilance, and strict enforcement. Schools have an obligation to provide a safe environment for every student. To not do the above would be negligent. However, even when such programs are set up and executed as well as possible, "bullying" often still occurs. Some students often still suffer and struggle quietly. Every once in a while, it ends in a "bullycide" or school shooting.

Is It Time To Go Back To Basics With Writing Instruction?

Is It Time To Go Back To Basics With Writing Instruction? | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
“We weren’t really sure how well it was going to work because we thought it was really low level for high school,” said Loribeth Libretta, an English teacher at John Adams. She’s been using the WIT strategies for five years now and has seen the difference it has made for students. She remembers one shy freshman boy who lacked confidence and most writing skills. Now, he’s a junior in her class and she says it’s a joy to read his well-developed paragraphs that flow together and express high-level thinking. He’s also become much more confident as a learner.

Forgetting These 7 Little Things Makes Every Day More Stressful

Forgetting These 7 Little Things Makes Every Day More Stressful | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
It never ceases to amaze me when I’m faced with the reality of how easily I lose sight of the truth – I catch myself stressing out over something silly, even though I know better.  And I know I’m not alone in my forgetfulness.  So much happens in our lives – so much chaos and distraction – that we often forget the important things we learned long ago.  Busy days and demanding obligations have a tendency to put our minds on autopilot, making us more reactive and less mindful every step of the way.

Therefore, some of life’s most important lessons need to be reviewed to be remembered.

A 1927 Map Reveals the Hide-Outs of Chicago's Most Notorious Gangsters

In the 1920s, the streets of Chicago were home to hundreds of secret clubhouses and hideouts—home bases to thieving, violent gangsters. Between 1923 and 1926, one sociologist at the University of Chicago endeavored to track down and map the favorite haunts and hang-outs of more than 1,300 gangs for the project Chicago’s Gangland.

“No less than 1,313 gangs have been discovered in Chicago and its environs!” Frederic Thrasher wrote at the time. “Their distribution as shown on the accompanying map makes it possible to visualize the typical areas of gangland and to indicate their place in the life and organization of Chicago.”
Sharrock's insight:

Landing a Man on the Moon: The Public's View

Landing a Man on the Moon: The Public's View | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
As is often the case when it comes to numerical matters, most Americans are pretty wide of the mark in their attempts to answer this question. The correct answer -- 12 -- is given by only 5% of Americans, most of whom guess a number that is substantially lower than the right total. Perhaps because of the recent emphasis on the Apollo 11 mission, which was manned by three astronauts (only two of whom actually walked on the moon, of course), about a third of Americans guess that only one, two or three men have ever walked on the moon. Another third guess between four and seven, meaning that about two-thirds of Americans feel that seven or fewer humans have been on the lunar surface. The median response is five, meaning that about half guess less than five, while about half guess more than five.
