The Trouble With Measuring Understanding

The Trouble With Measuring Understanding | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it

...But to pull back and look at the big picture is a bit troubling. There are so many moving parts in learning: assessment design, academic standards, underpinning learning targets for each standard, big ideas, essential questions, instructional strategies — and on and on and on in an endless, dizzying dance.

Why so much “stuff” for what should be a relatively simple relationship between learner and content?

Because it’s so difficult to agree on what understanding is — what it looks like, what learners should be able to say or do to prove that they in fact understand. Wiggins and McTighe go on in the UbD series to ask, “Mindful of our tendency to use the words understand and know interchangeably, what worthy conceptual distinctions should we safeguard in talking about the difference between knowledge and understanding?”2

Rebuilding NYC with the Power of the Mind

Rebuilding NYC with the Power of the Mind | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it

Frigand and Hill worked together after 9/11 gathering information from hundreds of sources including reports, brochures, magazines and the Internet, to create a poster-sized Mind Map of all the parties involved in the restoration of lower Manhattan. The main branches they created were government, civic, infrastructure, properties, victims and memorials. They also identified organizations created after 9/11. When the map was completed, it illustrated everyone involved and their connections in what Hill calls "a brain-friendly manner." People connected with the rebuilding effort were able to visualize the big picture and its details at the same time.

We know this concept (or use it) when we use K-W-L charts.

The Us vs. Them Mentality: How Group Thinking Can Irrationally Divide Us

The Us vs. Them Mentality: How Group Thinking Can Irrationally Divide Us | Teacher Tools and Tips | Scoop.it
Studies show that thinking of ourselves in terms of groups automatically leads to a kind of irrational group favoritism, which ends up dividing society, instead of bringing us together.
Sharrock's insight:

This article is helpful in fighting our tendencies toward thinking in polarities (us/them, this/that, choice #1 vs. choice #2, etc.). We are more complex and complicated than these either/or set ups. And problems are often more complex or complicated than the questions often posed in this way.

The concept photo does something interesting with the colors red and blue. In the United States, there are the Blue States and the Red States, layer that with the angel for blue and the devil for red. It works on two levels.
