This website has useful information for teachers and students about design thinking and interpretation. It looks at many elements of design and how to approach design in relation to technology. This website is helpful to give teachers some stepping stones and guidance as to where to go with design and technology.

Are we living in a world of information overload or information abundance? This post by Jackie Gerstein poses suggests we look at this as a time of information abundance. "... we have technologies to access any type of information and to create products that match the pictures and voices in our minds; and we can use technology to get the assistance and feedback from folks around the globe."

In this post she looks at the implications this has for education, exploring five points (quoted below):

* Educators are no longer gatekeepers to information.

* The Internet needs tobe open and available to students.

* Information and media literacy needs to be integrated across the curriculum and grade levels.

* Global-oriented and mulitcultural education also needs to be integrated across the curriculum and grade levels.

* Students developing their own Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) should be viewed as major instructional strategy.

What would happen if education shifted away from the cohort system that is used to one based on competency? This report looks at this issue in depth. The page that is linked to includes a full report, an executive summary, a link to the infographic (of which part is shown here), and a link to download the infographic. 

Perhaps the first question to ask is what is competency education? 

"CompetencyWorks defines competency education as a system of education, often referred to as proficiency or mastery based, in which students advance upon mastery. Competencies include explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students. Assessment is meaningful and serves as a positive learning experience for students. Students receive timely, differentiated support tailored to their individual learning needs. Learning outcomes include the application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions."

This post begins with a quote from President Obama:

"“The quality of math and science teachers is the most important single factor influencing whether students will succeed or fail in science, technology, engineering and math.” From this point it veers  in a different direction, noting that the issue is that teachers "are not given the freedom to support children in ways that will produce the scientists and innovators our country needs."

If we look to our past (and our present) we will find that we are not listening to the advice that "our nation's historic inventors, scientists, and physicists (whom have shared) their advice and experiences." 

Read the article to learn the experiences of Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Richard Feyman, Michio Kaku (which includes a video where he explains "that exams are crushing curiousity out of the next generation..."), as well as individuals around today such as Aaron Iba and Jack Andraka (the student who at the age of 15 created a test for pancreatic cancer).

Perhaps the question we need to ask is how do we change the system to support the necessary learning?
