"Professor Mitra is a Physicist and teaches Educational Technology at Newcastle University. Some years ago he had a revolutionary idea: “The Hole in the wall”. He installed computers in the streets of the slums of India and observed that children organize by themselves and learn naturally. So have we all a teacher’s soul inside us?''

Good Free App of the Day: Phonics Studio - Smart Apps For Kids

Good Free App of the Day: Phonics Studio - Smart Apps For Kids | teacher tech | Scoop.it

"I was looking at free app notifications - nothing was getting me excited and I thought, why do I keep saving Phonics Studio? I need to share this app! We've done GFAOTD features on a number of offerings from Grasshopper Apps because they're high quality, free and customizable. This one is certainly no exception.

If you have a child who is learning phonics, how sounds blend or needs articulation practice, this is a must-download. All speech therapists and teachers should definitely have Phonics Studio in their app arsenal.

It comes with over 2,500 gorgeous, high-quality flashcards. It's totally customizable and supports multiple users. It tracks data. You can use the sounds that come with the app or record your own. Your child can record their own for practice. The app even does your ironing.

*That last statement isn't actually true."

"I am currently working on a set of workshops where I am using the Literacy – Augmentative-transformative model of technology use http://edorigami.wikispaces.com/Tech_audit_tool ; to frame up use of iPads in a classroom.

I am currently looking at Augmentative or integrating technologies. Augmentative or integrative use of technology is often described as “Teaching with technology”. In this use of technology the student replaces traditional approaches with an equivalent digital version. A simple test to apply to see if the use of technology is Augmenting or transforming learning."

organise your cloud

Konstantinos Kalemis's curator insight, July 13, 2013 4:13 AM

The today’s classroom is changing. From when the school bell rings to study sessions that last well into the night, students are demanding more technology services from their schools. It’s important not only to keep pace with their evolving needs, but also to prepare them for the demands of the workplace tomorrow.

At the same time, education institutions are under increasing pressure to deliver more for less, and they need to find ways to offer rich, affordable services and tools. The results of the global financial crisis are visible all-around.  Those educators who can deliver these sophisticated communications environments, including the desktop applications that employers use today, will be helping their students find better jobs and greater opportunities in the future.

Cloud computing can help provide those solutions. It’s a network of computing resources—located just about anywhere—that can be shared. They bring to education a range of options not found in traditional IT models. In fact, the integration of software and assets you own with software and services in the cloud provides you with new choices for balancing system management, cost, and security while helping to improve services.

What’s in the cloud? Much of what’s on your desktop or in your data center right now. For example, e-mail in the cloud is, in many cases, free for schools and universities that need to upgrade legacy systems and expand services. The cloud helps ensure that students, teachers, faculty, parents, and staff have on-demand access to critical information using any device from anywhere. Both public and private institutions can use the cloud to deliver better services, even as they work with fewer resources. By sharing IT services in the cloud, your education institution can outsource noncore services and better concentrate on offering students, teachers, faculty, and staff the essential tools to help them succeed. The cloud is a bridge from the desktop to a world of devices, from the average on-campus school day to remote services anywhere and anytime. As much excitement as there is in cloud computing, it is just one piece of a technology landscape that spans from the on-premise data center to the cloud and reaches people through the computer, Web, and phone. By cloud computing, you are able to plan your long-term, data center strategy and as a result High Education Institutions i.e. Universities can benefit from opportunities in the cloud. The cloud has the power to drastically advance the goals of the educational system: to make it easier for institutions to empower their students to succeed while at the same time cutting costs and expanding accessibility. The cloud is poised to revolutionize the educational sector, and schools and learning institutions would be wise not to write off the cloud as just a business tool. The future opportunities for success or failure of students could rest in the cloud.

Using the cloud means low-cost; schools no longer have the heavy expense of dealing first-hand with their data storage and can instead devote their limited resources to purchasing effective digital eLearning resources. A cluster classroom is a regular mainstream classroom in which a small group or cluster of students with gifted identification are placed together. The classroom teacher has the skills necessary to meet the needs of gifted learners. Cloud computing is changing the ways people do personal learning, interactive learning and many-to-many learning, in the primary, secondary and higher education spheres

Ten Reflections on the First Year of an iPad Pilot

Ten Reflections on the First Year of an iPad Pilot | teacher tech | Scoop.it

Passing out iPads to students on the first day of school was like celebrating Christmas (or in this case Hanukkah)  with thirty antsy kids sitting around the tree,  attempting to hide their impatience.  Once the iPads had been handed out, students were instantly excited, engaged and enchanted with the new learning device in their hands. At first, everyone was confused about where to find work, where to save and store their products – and which app to use for what purpose. As with every pilot, these issues worked themselves out and soon classes were running pretty smoothly. Once they all learned what a “hard reset” was we were on our way. After an exciting year chalked full of learning lessons and changes in our learning landscape here are my takeaways:'

How To Create A Paperless Classroom With Your iPad | teacher tech | Scoop.it

"The idea of a paperless classroom is not new.

In fact, there was recently one very good blog, TeachPaperless, dedicated to this very idea. In short, the idea promotes not just a reduction of paper and other physical resources, but rather a more efficient workflow, quicker communication, improved access to learning materials, seamless digital portfolios, and more naturally connected student-teacher-student networks."
