Some very powerful questions to ponder as you think forward or massage your goals/vision for your future in education. None of them are easy to answer but that's the point, isn't it? To get us thinking differently? Enjoy.

Defining Authenticity in Historical Problem Solving

Defining Authenticity in Historical Problem Solving | Teacher Resources | Scoop.it

What is an authentic problem in world history? My colleagues and I grappled with this question when we set about to design a problem-based learning (PBL) class for AP World History. We looked enviously at some of our peer disciplines such as biology which we imagined having clear problems for students to work on (they didn't, but that is another blog post).

Lucy Wyatt's insight:

A discussion of pbl in teaching world history...not so much resource-filled as thoughtful.

A Montessori Approach to learning about prehistoric animals.

Lessons
In Lesson #1 learn about 18 different Dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor and Stegosaurus. Explore each dinosaur learning about their name meaning, pronunciation, size, food, fossil locations and other basic information.

Next in Lesson #2 learn about different parts of dinosaurs with an interactive teaching method.
Touch a dinosaur part in the photo-strip to change the featured dinosaur part on the page. Touch the speaker button to hear the correct pronunciation of the dinosaur part and touch the location button to see the dinosaur part highlighted on the diagram!

Activity Set 1
In Activity Level #1 & #2 assemble the dinosaur puzzles with pieces that are based on popular physical Montessori materials:

In the first dinosaur puzzle lesson, children have to look for the dinosaur puzzle piece that is blinking on the diagram. When they touch the correct piece it will move into position on the diagram and the name of the part can be heard aloud.

In the second dinosaur puzzle lesson, children have to look for the dinosaur puzzle piece that corresponds to the name shown at the top. For children who cannot read, the plant part name at the top can be touched to hear the name aloud for them to know which one to look for.

Also included is a sorting activity to identify different examples of dinosaurs.

This Montessori application was co-developed and approved by an AMI certified, Montessori teacher with over forty years experience educating children!

We sincerely thank you for your support of our Montessori applications and hope you enjoy this one!

The Periodic Table of the Figures of Speech: 40 Ways to Improve Your Writing

The Periodic Table of the Figures of Speech: 40 Ways to Improve Your Writing | Teacher Resources | Scoop.it
At the root of all good writing lies an understanding of how sentences are built. In kindergarten, we learn the fundamentals of grammar and the basic concepts of how sentences are constructed. For most of our elementary and secondary training in writing, we are taught simply to improve those grammatical and mechanical skills. A good writer, however, understands the complexities and rhetorical effects of how modifying sentence structure (known as sentence "schemes") improves the flow, interest, a
