Speed Dating With Books! | The Daring Librarian | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it

Via GwynethJones
Jennifer Cowley's insight:

I do speed book dating with my English classes twice a year (first & last independent reads).  The desks get moved into pairs and they each have 2 minutes to make their pitch and a minute after each to give feedback.  Then one partner rotates to another desk.  They get through about 10 rounds.  While they do, I circulate and listen to each students' booktalk (I can listen in on two at a time) to assess their speaking skills and book knowledge.  It's SO much better than having one student present to the entire class, especially for the kids who are afraid of public speaking and those for whom English is a second language.  The classroom does get loud, but I always remind them to use their quiet voice and it helps.  Some kids are more aware of volume than others.

Our library does a larger version of SPD for Valentine's Day... it's a huge event at the school and it's great to see so many kids and district staff be eager to participate.

Jennifer- Your version sounds great, too! Do you have that activity written up on a blog or wiki? I'd love to add that to the blog post under resources!

Insiders' Guide to K-12 Education in BC

Insiders' Guide to K-12 Education in BC | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it

This new book is a great resource for parents and teachers who are either new to the K-12 system in BC or who have felt alienated from schools because they don't understand how they do things now (as opposed to "when I went to school") or have had their own unfavourable experiences with the school system.

The authors are all experienced administrators in BC schools (while I know them, my recommendation is based on the preview chapters I read).  They are available for presentations to Parent Advisory Committees or other interested groups (contact them via the website).  The public is also invited to the book launch, September 11, 2015 at

What Every Parent and Educator Needs to Know
Jennifer Cowley's insight:

This new book is a great resource for parents and (student) teachers who are either new to the K-12 system in BC or who have felt alienated from schools because they don't understand how they do things now (as opposed to "when I went to school") or have had their own unfavourable experiences with the school system. It would also be a good addition to professional library collections and teacher education cohorts.

LGBTQ Canadian Children's Literature

LGBTQ Canadian Children's Literature | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it
Books written, illustrated, and/or translated by Canadians, about Canadians, and/or set in Canada which include LGTBQ themes. A book's inclusion here is NOT a guarantee of quality or appropriateness for your library's particular readership. Build your collection as you deem appropriate BUT ensure that any LGTBQ resources you acquire will be readily accessible to LGTBQ readers and others through clear cataloguing/tagging and accessible shelving. Pairs with http://bitly.com/1M10z5m
Jennifer Cowley's insight:

I created this board for a project in my M.Ed. program (LIS 516) at the University of Alberta.  Finding titles that are LGBTQ AND Canadian is a very difficult process.  If you want to collaborate on the board, please PM me on Pinterest.

Sorry Bell, Accessing U.S. Netflix is Not Theft - Michael Geist

Sorry Bell, Accessing U.S. Netflix is Not Theft - Michael Geist | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it
Bell Media president Mary Ann Turcke sparked an uproar last week when she told a telecom conference that Canadians who use virtual private networks (VPNs) to access the U.S. version of Netflix are stealing. Turcke is not the first Canadian broadcast executive to raise the issue - her predecessor Kevin Crull and Rogers executive David Purdy expressed similar frustration with VPN use earlier this year - but her characterization of paying customers as thieves was bound to garner attention.

The Caitlyn Jenner Reactions are Teaching Us a Valuable Lesson, Trans* or Otherwise | Amy Poehler's Smart Girls

The Caitlyn Jenner Reactions are Teaching Us a Valuable Lesson, Trans* or Otherwise | Amy Poehler's Smart Girls | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it
Monday was historic. Not just because Caitlyn Jenner revealed herself for the first time on the cover of Vanity Fair — though her reveal is the cause of it — but because it mainstreamed the conversation about the way our world views the glorious spectrum of variety within it. It also highlighted an issue our society has with the way we discuss issues that affect both trans* people and women in general. Namely: looks! First thing's first: never seen the asterisk at the end of the word "trans*" be

The Homophobia Problem in Women’s Tennis Is Its Race and Gender Problem Too |

The Homophobia Problem in Women’s Tennis Is Its Race and Gender Problem Too | | Teacher-Librarianship | Scoop.it

As we are all patting ourselves on the back about how cheerful the media has been about Caitlyn Jenner’s gender transition, pay attention to this: no one does anything about the gender-shaming of  female athletes. In fact, it is often promoted by the sports establishment in articles like Ben Rothenberg’s. So it is no wonder that nearly all the lesbians on the women’s tennis tour, and many other lesbian and trans athletes, stay in the closet at a moment when lesser folk with lots of social and economic privilege can be as out as the please.
