Five key roles for 21st-century school librarians - eSchool News | Teacher librarians and transliteracy | Scoop.it

According to Joyce Valenza, teacher librarian at Springfield Township High School in Pennsylvania and author of School Library Journal’s “Never Ending Search” blog, this is the golden age of librarianship.

Co-presenting a session at educational technology leader Alan November’s 2012 Building Learning Communities (BLC) conference on July 19 with Shannon McClintock Miller, district librarian and technology integration specialist at Van Meter Schools in Iowa, Valenza outlined five areas in which K-12 schools should turn to their librarians to empower learners with valuable 21st-century college and career readiness skills.

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library | Teacher librarians and transliteracy | Scoop.it

Flipping the classroom changes the place in which content is delivered. If the teacher assigns lecture-type, frontal instruction–in the form of video, simulations, slidecasts, readings, podcasts–as homework, then class time can be used interactively. The class becomes conversation space, creation space, space where teachers actively facilitate learning.

Flipping frees face-to-face classroom time for interactive and applied learning, activities that inspire critical thinking, exploration, inquiry, discussion, collaboration, problem solving.  So, the classroom and the library become more learner-centered.

How Should We Teach Information Literacy in Schools?

How Should We Teach Information Literacy in Schools? | Teacher librarians and transliteracy | Scoop.it

When the majority of information moves from print to digital form, we need a new set of critical skills in order to find what we need and use if properly. Many students get to college without having learned much in the way of information literacy, although professors often expect it was already taught. How should schools teach kids about finding good materials for research? About plagiarism? About finding authoritative sources online?

Teacher/Librarian Collaboration – From a Teacher's Perspective

The library is one of most the perfect places for “beyond the classroom learning.” It is the place where students are, or should be encouraged to explore other worlds, to develop their imagination, to think about the impossible. This process of inquiry is what makes learning a beautiful thing and this crucial step, “the jewel,” is something commonly missed when teachers plan a new unit of work. Sometimes we fail to go back to the basics. We replace simple words such as “finding out” and “enjoyment” with “success” and “assessment.” Often teachers can forget about the process and cast their eyes only to the outcome.
