Why It's Time To Focus On Skills (Not Just Cool Tools)

Why It's Time To Focus On Skills (Not Just Cool Tools) | Teacher Learning Networks | Scoop.it
There is a laser-like focus on cool tools and apps these days. Eric Patnoudes encourages you to take a step back and take time to focus on skills.

Via Gust MEES
Linda Alexander's insight:

Honestly, all the countless cool tools,” “web 2.0 websites,” “educational apps are beginning to bore me.  It's often hard to know if they're true educational sites or simply someone trying to market a new product.  It is high time to return the essential questions each teacher should ask from the start...and this article really does the trick.

Linda Alexander's comment, February 1, 8:22 AM
Great link...and I agree there is a lot of confusion these days. As far as future job skills, there was a recent study that showed we are very poor at predicting specific occupations. It is far better to focus on core competencies versus preparing students for specific jobs given we're not all sure what they will even be in the future..my view.
Gust MEES's comment, February 1, 8:31 AM
@Linda: TRUE, there will be NEW jobs which nobody today could predict! Therefore it is very important to teach the students, learners, the BEST possible skills of ICT which WE know actually and to teach them "Learning 2 Learn", so that they will be BEST prepared for Self-Learning (autodidact) to master the "Life Long Learning" who is aa MUST for 21st Century!
Ness Crouch's curator insight, February 3, 3:30 AM

I a big believer in teaching skills. Give learners skills to apply elsewhere and they can do so much more.

This list of twitter short forms includes the basics, but also some profanity that teachers are wise to know if they use twitter in their classrooms (they should).  Created by Bliss Hanlin, a Community Manager for eModeration, the Twitter abbreviations and acronyms are an odd mash-up of text slang, old school chat room phrases, common sense short forms and corporate buzzwords.

A Simple Comprehensive Guide on The use of Personal Learning Networks in Education

A Simple Comprehensive Guide on The use of Personal Learning Networks in Education | Teacher Learning Networks | Scoop.it

PLNs are basically based on the concept of a learning community. Teachers who are passionate about developing their learning experiences recognize the value of sharing their knowledge and expertise with others. They constantly seek out other learning venues that could be experts in their field or other professionals with whom they can exchange information. They, in short, become a part and parcel of a learning community of like-minded people.

PLNs have a great importance f not only in education but in our overall professional development and that is why I deem it crucial to write a simple and comprehensive guide for teachers to review and hopefully share with their students.

The ART Of Collaboration (Collaborative Behaviours)

The ART Of Collaboration (Collaborative Behaviours) | Teacher Learning Networks | Scoop.it
If people are given the right tools and the right environment, will they spontaneously collaborate and share knowledge? Why do some people find it difficult to share and collaborate? Would incentives and rewards make a difference?

Collaboration in the workplace is now high on the priority list of many organisations seeking to leverage social technologies to free-up knowledge and provide opportunities for co-creation, co-production and innovation.

Gust MEES: I was one of the TOP10 Knol authors (Google Knol discontinued its service as on May 1, 2012) and I was involved in a lot of collaborative articles with multicultural authors and it was a very positive experience... I hope one day having the same opportunity back again on WordPress now...

Understanding the Instructor’s Role in Facilitating Online Discussions

Understanding the Instructor’s Role in Facilitating Online Discussions | Teacher Learning Networks | Scoop.it
As I reviewed course evaluations after my first year of online teaching, an unexpected theme emerged: several students mentioned they wished I had been a bigger part of their discussions, primarily so they would know if they were on the right track. I naively assumed my silence during group discussion would be taken as evidence by students that their discussions were right on target, but this was not the case at all. Students needed more reassurance, especially since I was asking them to take very big risks in terms of explaining their understanding of a content area that was often new and challenging for them..
