Meaningful language experiences!

Stewart-Marshall's curator insight, January 25, 2013 4:31 PM

Waitzman’s lesson – and its theatrical trappings – is no one-time exercise. It is part of an intricate methodology to educate students with dyslexia and other learning challenges.

AIM Academy, a private independent school for college-prep students with learning differences, uses an unusual arts-based approach that includes costumes, games, activities, and classrooms decorated as medieval castles and prehistoric caves.

“I’m not just going to give a quiz or a work sheet or have them remember a lecture,” Waitzman said. “It doesn’t work with students with language-based differences.”

What works at the 217-student academy is the philosophy “live it and learn it,” said Patricia Roberts, the executive director, CEO, and cofounder of the K-12 school.

Leaders need to learn continually, as well as help others continue learning.

Carolyn said: "Pretty cool graphic" Thanks for the encouragement. Idea: Would it work and be useful for a Padagogy Wheel to be customised for the needs of those with Dyslexia. Could we change action verbs, activities and App selections for each Cognitive Domain Category as well as specialised PD for teachers on how to design interactions with those apps to achieve Redefinition in the SAMR model. Also PD about how to motivate these learners. Hmmmm could that be a great learning design model to help these learners? .... what do you think?

Creating Units Based on Learning Targets

Creating Units Based on Learning Targets | Learning Targets | Scoop.it

"The Ohio Resource Center offers free resources and lesson plans for teachers. We are on the cusp of realigning ALL of these resources to be common core friendly, but in the meantime, I have pulled together a sample unit plan for 9-10 grade reading informational text.

Using original materials created by ORC contributors, I realigned the original work and organized the lessons according to common core standards. I want to walk you through this process to discuss how this might/could look in a classroom. Keep in mind this is just a sample of my process and solely intended as one way to help guide you in your efforts to implement the common core."
