10 Social Media Skills for The 21st Century Teachers | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Teach Your Own | Scoop.it

The potential of social networking sites in education is huge and we need to capitalize on it to enhance our professional development and consequently improve the quality of our instruction. Searching for articles on this topic , I came across Doug Johnson's post on the 10 social media competencies for teachers [http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com/blue-skunk-blog/2010/7/31/top-ten-social-media-competencies-for-teachers.html ]. I like the competencies Doug included and decided to make an infographic featuring all of these skills.  Have a look and share with your colleagues.

This Is What Happens When A Kid Leaves Traditional Education

This Is What Happens When A Kid Leaves Traditional Education | Teach Your Own | Scoop.it
Logan Laplante is a 13 year-old boy who was taken out of the education system to be home schooled instead. Not only was he home schooled, but Logan had the ability to tailor his education to his interests and also his style of learning, something traditional education does not offer. As Logan has mentioned, when he grows up he wants to be happy and healthy. At a TEDx talk in 2013, he discussed how hacking his education is helping him achieve that goal.

I couldn't agree MORE. Our job is to launch our kids, to instill in them the drive to thrive. Can't very well do that if every need is fulfilled, and ever want satisfied by others. Love this piece!

This is an important topic - and not just to librarians. Many schools will need to re-evaluate their classes to include more embedded technology & ethics skills.

Maria João Loureiro's curator insight, February 1, 3:37 PM

21st Century Technology Skills Are a Core Competency for Today’s Graduates

21st Century Technology Skills Are a Core Competency for Today’s Graduates | Teach Your Own | Scoop.it
Our students need to be comfortable with the information technologies that are inextricably linked to the 21st century skills the work place requires, and teachers need to help pave the way.

Some of the skills commonly being cited as vital in today’s workforce include:

- The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing (with almost all of today’s written communications in business being conducted digitally).

- Teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate with others in diverse groups settings (and information technologies are increasingly essential to many forms of organizational collaboration).

- The ability to innovate and be creative (today’s information technologies empower innovate and creative capabilities in ways not previously envisioned).

- The ability to locate, organize, and evaluate information from multiple sources.

Here's the problem as I see it: Whatever your beliefs, this is *inaccurate.* He is changing the historical text, and therefore the meaning of what Lincoln said, and meant. This is a denial of reality--changing facts to suit one's personal needs or views, and because he is the President, it sends the wrong message to "students" of history everywhere that they can, and should do the same.

Wrong.
