This is a 7 minute infomercial on the Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program, a series of supplemental reading workbooks designed to HELP students of all readi...
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

I haven't seen the program, but this video is a great example integrating literacy with content learning AND connecting to what is RELEVANT to students.  Would love to see more debate and discourse in the pedagogy rather than teacher question-student answer-teacher evaluation.

Post-its: Little Notes for Big Discussions

Post-its: Little Notes for Big Discussions | Teach Core Literacy for 21st Century Succes | Scoop.it
A great tool for helping students with note taking, as well as speaking in discussions on a topic, is the Post It. With Post It Notes, students can write down a thought to refer back to later in the discussion.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Notice how this easy-to-use strategy also directly scaffolds the task of thinking beyond the text and articulating those thoughts with text evidence.  The note is the "off the page" thinking.  The text evidence is near the note in the text itself.

Students aren't copying evidence onto the note as I see in some classrooms.  Their action is the higher-order skills: to interpret, analyze, reflect.

This is also an annotation strategy for texts that we are not allowed to write in.

Daniel H. Cohen: For argument’s sake | Video on TED.com

Why do we argue? To out-reason our opponents, prove them wrong, and, most of all, to win! ... Right? Philosopher Daniel H.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

In building expertise with argument, as called for in the Common Core SS, are we teaching students to be arguers who gain from losing?   Let's structure classroom arguments so the learning involved is the priority, and losing is a cognitive gift.

Literacy Partners in the Science Classroom

Literacy Partners in the Science Classroom | Teach Core Literacy for 21st Century Succes | Scoop.it
By pairing students with common abilities and goals, teachers build teams that will come together to better understand texts and literature. Learn how one high school teacher pairs her Literacy Partners in her Physics class.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Partner discussions are a powerful tool to engage students actively in making meaning from complex texts.   Added benefits, they learn collaboration and communication.   I highly recommend factoring "prove it" tasks to many conversations to engage students in justifying their ideas with text evidence, especially when they discuss rich tech-dependent questions like author's purpose.  Teach students to ask one another, "How do you know?" or "What clues in the text make you think that is true?" You can also start students with the informal, "Prove it!" to get started and make asking for justification a routine conversational move.

2001-07 California Writing Standards Test - Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) (CA Dept of Education)

Information about previous years' California Writing Standards Tests.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Even those these guides are based on former standards, many of the student writing exemplars within them are excellent for sources for student writing in the top three common core focus areas:  argument (persuasive and literary response), informational text (summary writing), and narrative.  A great learning activity is to give students (or teachers) 2-3 essays on the same prompt what recieved different scores.  Hide the scores. Engage participants in collaborating to analyze which essays are most effective, and why.  Have them use text evidence, and Common Core Writing standards' indicators to justify their respones.

What is missing in these exemplars is content area writing and hybrid genres that move beyond the formula to dynamically impact an audience. We must always bring in mentor texts from the real world to illuminate the possibility and power available to effective writers.

Using Performance Assessment Tasks for Professional Learning

Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

Planning with the end in mind is key for student learning an professional learning.  Understanding the expectations of the new standards, and where students are performing in relation to that shift is essential for effective CCSS instruction.  Here's one approach to help teachers do just that.

Be sure to click the links on page 3 to see the performance tasks teachers developed in ELA and MATH, and the researchers used for this pilot.

Students Learn by Arguing in Science Labs

Students Learn by Arguing in Science Labs | Teach Core Literacy for 21st Century Succes | Scoop.it
New research suggests that teaching students to argue, question, and communicate in the lab like real scientists can deepen their understanding of scientific concepts.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

While argument cuts across all disciplines, discpline-specific argument is important.  Language, thinking and evidence varies tremendously by context and we must prepare students to argue across diverse contexts.

Sarah Sparks makes an important point about the messiness of research, and how students avoid this in the classroom.

I'll add that teachers do too.  None of us want to "fail" and often thus take a simpliefied route.    It's time to turn that approach on end:  embrace complexity, take risks, fail and try again.

We aren't looking for perfection- we are looking for deep learning and thought.

Demand for Testing Products, Services on the Rise

Demand for Testing Products, Services on the Rise | Teach Core Literacy for 21st Century Succes | Scoop.it
The market for testing products and services is surging, as schools scramble to prepare for common-core tests and embrace new, classroom-based assessment models.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

The demand for QUALITY over quantity is promising.  This is more challenging for the developers, but better for teachers and students.   Remember the best formative assessments are relevant and connected to the curriculum we teach. The most important tasks we engage students in doing give us valuable data.  Take advantage of that data.  You don't always have to buy a new test to learn what students need.

Guest Post | Primary Sources Meet Free Web 2.0 Tools for Common Core Learning

Guest Post | Primary Sources Meet Free Web 2.0 Tools for Common Core Learning | Teach Core Literacy for 21st Century Succes | Scoop.it
Primary Source suggests three tech tools matched to three current events topics that, together, can help you teach both Common Core skills and digital literacy.
Tonya Ward Singer's insight:

While the examples are for secondary teachers, elementary teachers will also benefit from using these tech tools to teach literacy.

I do wonder, however, how long QR codes will last as a tech tool in our world. They grew to mainstream for a while and have fallen to the background.  In the classroom, students must be using a mobile device to access the code. The cool factor is one thing, and a basic link on a digital file accomplishes the same objective across mobile devices and desktop computers.

These books about influence and marketing are great for both learning to use the tools of persuasion, and for being a critical reader/consumer when the tools are used on us.
