Jon Stewart Finds The REAL Scandal At The IRS

Jon Stewart Finds The REAL Scandal At The IRS | Tax Law | Scoop.it
The next time an auditor gives me (or my client) a hard time about some missing frivolous docs, I may be very tempted to remind them that not only has the IRS itself been guilty of "lost emails," but that according to IRS commissioner John Koskinen, they only keep up backups for six months. Six months? Seriously? No one says it better than Jon Stewart: "The government agency whose entire business model relies on forcing Americans to live as borderline hoarders only keeps their shit for six months? No. That's unacceptable. You never get a notice from the IRS saying 'please bring your records down to us... if you can find them."

Don't Blow Your Tax Refund - Eyes on the Dollar

Don't Blow Your Tax Refund - Eyes on the Dollar | Tax Law | Scoop.it
As tempting as it may be when you get that check from Uncle Sam or see that bump in your checking account, you should definitely opt for the responsible decision and go for the delayed vs. instant gratification. It may not be the most "fun" option right now but it will greatly diminish your stress in the bigger picture which definitely sounds more fun than more stress later on down the road.

Law Lets I.R.S. Seize Accounts on Suspicion, No Crime Required

Stories like these (and they are extremely common) are a prime example of why people need to educate themselves on the basics of tax law!! You don’t need to be an expert on the matter but when it comes to your day to day transactions and business dealings, make sure you are in complete compliance. "I didn’t know" or "Nobody told me" will NOT hold up as valid excuses for the IRS when they inevitably come after you and you are left with a massive tax bill looming over your head - or worse.

Cash Is Legal, But Be Careful, IRS May Think You're A Crook - Forbes

Cash Is Legal, But Be Careful, IRS May Think You're A Crook - Forbes | Tax Law | Scoop.it
Be sure to heed this advice if you own your own business and pay your employees/contracted employees in cash. Also, if you work in the service industry (i.e. bartenders, servers, hairdressers, etc.) you still have to report your tips. Just because it is cash doesn’t mean it isn't taxable income

If You Handle Cash, IRS Can Seize First, Ask Questions Later - Forbes

If You Handle Cash, IRS Can Seize First, Ask Questions Later - Forbes | Tax Law | Scoop.it
If you make frequent cash deposits, make sure that you are in full compliance and know the $10,000 cash reporting law. 'Structuring' (manipulating cash transactions to fall below the $10,00 threshold) will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Claiming ignorance (even in those cases where you truly didn’t know) will NOT be a valid defense - it is even worse than the "Twinkie defense."

Criminals use IRS website to steal data on 104,000 people - May. 26, 2015 | Tax Law | Scoop.it
It is scary just how crafty and sophisticated these criminals are getting. Gone are the days with the solo hackers working out of their one-bedroom apartment or the teenage hoodlums working out of their parents' homes after school. We're dealing with an entire cybermafia now - an organized crime ring much harder to track down than the traditional ones we're used to seeing (e.g. the Corleone and the Soprano variety). Welcome to the 21st century. We're not in Kansas anymore.

Beware Tax Mistakes IRS Calls Willful - Forbes

Beware Tax Mistakes IRS Calls Willful - Forbes | Tax Law | Scoop.it
It is crucial that you understand what the IRS constitutes as willful v. non-willful in regards to tax mistakes. Simply claiming ignorance doesn’t always cut it. Educate yourself on these distinctions now and if the day ever comes that you find yourself in hot water with the IRS seek legal counsel to devise a strategy and come up with the best course of action. The solution is often much more complicated than simply saying "I'm sorry. It was an accident."

It's nice to see the Department of Treasury publicly admit that they don’t know how to tackle a certain issue and then make a logical and responsible decision (e.g. delaying the "individual mandate" penalty) until they can figure out how to make it work.
