This is the new Google Earth

The whole world is now in your browser. Fly through landmarks and cities like London, Tokyo and Rome in stunning 3D, then dive in to experience them firs
Art Jones's insight:

Seeing EARTH from space never gets old.

Now seeing EARTH from many more vantage points is possible because Google earth just received its first update in 2 years. Be very careful when viewing the Google Earth platform because it is so amazing that you could spend hours touring the most urban city or the most remote landscapes.

Better than binge watching NETFLIX ;)

Life on Earth is getting a major redistribution, and the consequences are serious

Life on Earth is getting a major redistribution, and the consequences are serious | The Future of Everything | Scoop.it
A study published in the journal Science shows that climate change is driving a major redistribution of life on Earth.
Art Jones's insight:

When French Champagne houses start buying fields in Britain to grow grapes for sparkling wine, you know the climate in the Champagne region is changing.

When coffee-growing regions begin moving to higher altitudes in order to continue to grow the most flavorful coffee beans those growers are not likely to be climate change deniers.

The coffee and champagne apocalypse is proof positive climate change is not something that will happen in the future climate change is happening now.

Industry 4.0 held to ransom

Industry 4.0 held to ransom | The Future of Everything | Scoop.it
This revolution brings with it new cyber risk which could stall production – and even put a stop to business altogether.
Art Jones's insight:

Industry 4.0 has the feel of Gold Rush fever. The rush toward  and related investment in achieving the awe inspiring benefits of connecting everything #IOE is far ahead of investment to build the technologies that will secure the connected future.

Excerpt:

"When digital ambitions outpace cyber defences PwC has reported that around 74 percent of UK manufacturing firms expect to drive high levels of digitisation and integration by 2021. However, separate research by the EEF also tells us that nearly half of manufacturers have not increased their investment in cybersecurity over the past two years. Clearly, many companies are in danger of allowing their Industry 4.0 ambitions to outpace their approach to cybersecurity."

The Internet of Things and its unintended consequences: why we should proceed with caution

The Internet of Things and its unintended consequences: why we should proceed with caution | The Future of Everything | Scoop.it
Cross-posted from http://www.futuristgerd.com/2015/06/18/the-internet-of-things-and-its-unintended-consequences-why-we-should-proceed-with-caution/ The Internet of Things (IoT) / Internet of…
Art Jones's insight:

The Internet of Things (IOT) promises the ability to bring great benefit to humankind.

We will have sensors in or bathroom facilities, built into our toothbrush or comb. The sensors all around us when synched up with whatever the computing power of the day (In 5 years what how much more powerful will IBM Watson be?). Sensors will notify you and your doctor that you are advised to come in for a visit because you were prescreened via daily teeth brushing, thanks to your IOT enabled toothbrush.

When we have the power to connect everything almost anything seems possible. We will live in a world where the things that surround us will seem to be almost enchanted (think the brooms in Disney's Fantasia).

Now for an alternate view of the future as captured in this quote attributed to Sophocles who died in 406 BC: Nothing vast enters the lives of mortals without a curse.

Art Jones's insight:

We are racing toward a future where the Internet of Everything will make technology exponentially more central to our everyday existence.

With technology striding to center stage the author of this article suggests it is about time we acknowledge a person's TQ as important as their level of IQ & EQ (where TQ = Technology Quotient)?

Self-driving and electric cars are going to have tons of strange effects on society

Self-driving and electric cars are going to have tons of strange effects on society | The Future of Everything | Scoop.it
Autonomy and electrification will have bigger impacts on the world than you might expect.
Art Jones's insight:

Here are just a few of the 2nd and 3rd level benefits the world will gain from self driving cars.

Excerpt:

Benedict Evans, a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and no stranger to tech trends analysis, has published some thoughts on what he calls second- and third-order effects of the disruption that’s going to play out on our highways.

Consider electrification. We know that losing the internal combustion engine will be good for the planet. But, as Evans points out, a lot will change when the supporting infrastructure for gas guzzlers disappears: many repair shops will be out of a job, because most car maintenance is focused around the motor. And gas stations no longer have a purpose, so what happens to the convenience stores that they contain—and the half of America’s tobacco sales that gas stations account for?

The not-so-secret plan to genetically modify astronauts

The not-so-secret plan to genetically modify astronauts | The Future of Everything | Scoop.it
Some scientists are thinking about what human space travelers will look like in the future. They might be extra-small and radiation-proof.
Art Jones's insight:

Everyday it seems we get a little bit closer to making traveling through space to Mars a reality. The risk are great, yet we humans are adventures so we will one day in the not too distant future we will send humans to the red planet.

Excerpt:

"A few scientists have started to explore whether we might be able to do a little better if we created new types of humans more fit for the travails of space travel. That’s right: genetically modified astronauts.

Let’s be clear. No one is trying to grow an astronaut in a bubbling vat somewhere. But some far-out ideas once relegated to science fiction and TED Talks have recently started to take concrete form. Experiments have begun to alter human cells in the lab. Can they be made radiation-proof? Can they be rejiggered to produce their own vitamins and amino acids?"
