Stacked NAND flash devices set to benefit from industry increase in capital equipment expenditure | TOSHIBA Semiconductor & Storage Products Company | Europe(EMEA) | General Scoops | Scoop.it
A report recently published by Research & Markets predicts that the global capital spend associated with memory device production will experience a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.86% between now and 2019. This reflects the heightening consumer demand for access to greater data storage resources, as well as the shortening of replacement cycles being witnessed for portable electronics goods (in many cases now measuring less than a year).

These figures cover investment into capital equipment for DRAM and NAND flash devices, as well as the emerging 3D NAND flash memory sector. The report highlights that NAND flash and 3D NAND flash will represent an increasing proportion the financial outlay between now and the end of the decade.

Publication of this report comes soon after Toshiba announced its development of the world’s first 16-die stacked NAND flash memory, based on through silicon via (TSV) technology. While previously 3D NAND flash memories were connected together with wire bonding, TSV takes a more innovative approach. It utilizes vertical electrodes and vias instead of wire bonds. As a result it supports considerably higher data transfer rates and curbs power consumption.
