Knowing How Doctors Die Can Change End-Of-Life Discussions

Knowing How Doctors Die Can Change End-Of-Life Discussions | Talking about death | Scoop.it
Dr. Ken Murray wrote an essay a decade ago about how the gentler care doctors choose at the end of life stands apart. His work still shapes how some doctors talk to patients about death.

While medicine gets better, dying gets worse: Doctors are so good at | Talking about death | Scoop.it
My first death was at the age of 25. It was August 1999, and I was a fresh-faced junior doctor, just a few weeks out of medical school. Jean was a lady in her 80s who had come in to hospital with a problem with her bowel. My team – a surgical team – initially hoped that we could fix the problem with an operation, that we would be able to make Jean better. But it became increasingly clear over a short period of time that she was deteriorating, and was unlikely to survive an operation. She was dying.

I am dying and I want everyone to talk about it

I am dying and I want everyone to talk about it | Talking about death | Scoop.it
This is a plea to my family, carer, doctors and specialists: start talking about death as much as about life. Is that too much to ask?

The UnCommon Core by KATHERINE THOME

The UnCommon Core by KATHERINE THOME | Talking about death | Scoop.it
For Moms, Mothers + Muthas
Dr LJ's insight:

"Because my father died when I was young, I have made plans. Lots of them. My husband and I have “an excess” of term life insurance. Our wills are up-to-date. We debate who will raise Ellie if we die. I have plans upon plans. I’ve gone so far as to figure out where I’ll go and what I’ll do if my husband dies and leaves me a single mom in Silicon Valley. But I am not prepared. This rational planning of the head never prepares the heart. At least once a month, I still wake in a panic at 3 am."

Living in dying | New Philosopher

Living in dying | New Philosopher | Talking about death | Scoop.it
We will all surely die; leave our bodies, end as dust.

But how would you react to knowing with considerable certainty that you will leave this life within two years? Where would your mind take you?

I have a condition that has no known cause, is incurable, and is always terminal; a mysterious and rapidly progressing bodily decline from leading an active, full, healthy life to death in an average time of 27 months. I want my leaving to be as healthy as my living.
Dr LJ's insight:

"This acceptance of impending and foreseeable departure confronts us with our own cultural values and attitudes: our fears around death and dying, our hopes, our anticipation and/or avoidance of grief and loss, and our capacity to respectfully share the journey of the departing. It also offers everyone the opportunity to seize the day, to share the journey, to express and receive compassion, empathy and sympathy with grace, to share stories and laughter, and to reconcile meaning in our own lives."

This was runner-up in the New Philosopher Writers' Award VII in the 'health' section, and deservedly so! Enjoy.

The UK has topped the 2015 rankings for end-of-life care. A nurse describes this special job
Dr LJ's insight:

"We recognise that people are more than their illness." So important, particularly as people's illnesses take up more time and space. "We can’t nurse their bodies back to health, but we can help to soothe their souls." Vital work.

In the Hospital, Resisting the Urge to Do More | Talking about death | Scoop.it
So often when a patient is dying, I must hold myself and my residents back and quiet our itchy fingers.
Dr LJ's insight:
This is very familiar. Sometimes it's hard to fight the urge to always do more tests and try more treatments. But this is not always best care. Insightful article.

This is not Casualty – in real life CPR is brutal and usually fails | Talking about death | Scoop.it
Modern medicine, however, still shies away from discussions about natural death and dying, and is more comfortable in the realms of what can be done. Doing something always trumps doing nothing. Healthcare professionals have become willing interventionists, and we cannot stop meddling, interfering and attempting to fix.
Dr LJ's insight:

"Only 3% of over-80s survive CPR and 1.9% of secondary cancer patients. It’s time we doctors stopped meddling and let such patients die with dignity."

Grief is Unique

Grief is Unique | Talking about death | Scoop.it
My first loss was shocking...it was submerged with a host of other feelings, mostly denial. I didn't want to be that one in four who lost a baby; I felt I could almost pretend I hadn't lost a baby, and that would erase the miscarriage.
Dr LJ's insight:

"Be aware that grief is like the ocean. The sadness and feelings of loss are like the waves...Some days the sea is almost still, but on other days the waves are like a tsunami."

Mortality Versus Potential - Nillu Nasser Stelter

Mortality Versus Potential - Nillu Nasser Stelter | Talking about death | Scoop.it
I was going to start this post – my first of the year – by wishing you a happy new year, but that seems trite, because, well, David Bowie died today. I hate the feeling as we age that the people we love are not immune to death. And because I cannot be trite, I …

The assumption that the human race will survive plays an underappreciated role in our lives.

A really interesting article by Simon Scheffler on how believing other people will live on after our death shapes our lives. I recommend reading twice, going away to think for a while then reading again!
