Wakeling blasts Labor over TAFE - Bendigo Advertiser

Wakeling blasts Labor over TAFE - Bendigo Advertiser | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Victoria's Higher Education Minister has rejected critcism of TAFE.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The reality is that TAFE is not being funded fully and under these "market driven" reforms significant amounts of taxpayer funds are being siphoned off to private for profit based RTOs at the expense of TAFE. On top of that far too many of these private RTOs are not delivering the goods or the quality. But then that's what market driven ideology produces. The pursuit of profit over sound skill acquisition and development to meet the real industry and community needs. Markets respond better to "wants" rather than real needs. This is the basic flaw. TAFE needs to be fully funded. Competition policy rather tha cooperative-collaboration policy is the real cause.

Casualisation of the TAFE workforce is at a ridiculously high level. This desperately needs to be addressed.

In 2012 the Coalition government cut TAFE-specific funding including about $170 million a year towards community service obligations set by government.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

State opposition’s plans to restore "community service obligation funding" for public TAFE System.  Now there is a very sound idea!  ....... and apparently the private "for profit" providers don't like it.  Surprise, surprise!

A key statement re the role of TAFE?

"Within this tertiary education system governments must recognise the role of TAFE as the public provider in terms of its broader social and economic contributions and the critical infrastructure and capability it provides for many industries and in many communities. "

Auswide collapse a sign of things to come under Baird govt’s TAFE privatisation future

The Baird government’s ‘Smart and Skilled’ reforms of the vocational education and training will make the Auswide Merimbula experience the norm rather than the exception, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Privatisation of education and training inevitably produces these significant "market failures."

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Four months before essentially the same market based model is introduced here in NSW as has been introduced in Victoria. This has been an unmitigated disaster in Victoria and TAFE damaged immensely. NSW Premier Baird appears to want to make the same mistakes. So much for learning from past experience and avoiding the same mistakes. A NYC (Not Yet Competent) at this stage for you Mr Baird.

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The cuts under the Smart and Skilled reforms, the cutting and shortening of many courses, or the extent of fee increases planned were hardly discussed at all. On the other hand the discussion highlighted the obvious goodwill and value that is placed on TAFE courses by so many. Unfortunately many of the older, more traditional courses of greater depth and with broader skills that underpin many other vocations are disappearing under these cuts.

Dubbo students undertaking a range of vocational education courses will pay more from next year - with some courses rising by as much as 33 to 70 per cent.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:
The question has been asked: "Will the proposed fee hikes for TAFE courses push more people away from further education?" The result? So far 98.53% of people surveyed by Fairfax media believe that it will. Why then don't the various LNP governments who are imposing this under their so called Smart & Skilled policy see the electorate's view. Maybe they will at the next state elections! People don't want to see TAFE destroyed.

Fee confusion ‘a barrier to training’

Fee confusion ‘a barrier to training’ | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
COMPLEXITIES triggered by next year’s open training market could negate the benefits of allowing student choice to drive funding, the NSW Greens say.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

It is in serious danger of being a confusing experiment that we should not allow to be inflicted on individuals. Education and training is too important. Experiments normally require consent. Have the broad community really been consulted properly and given approval of this radical and expensive change?

Deeper TAFE cuts revealed in secret documents

Deeper TAFE cuts revealed in secret documents | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Victoria's TAFE system is facing deeper cuts than first thought, with secret documents revealing plans for a raft of campus and course closures.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Outrageous, shameful and incredibly myopic in regards to future skill needs. The cuts to TAFE must be very close to the bone by this stage.  It's quite telling that the depth if the TAFE cuts that the respective governments of each state are implementing are trying to keep very much a secret. It's a very bad look once the public see how deep they are and the effects on them directly in terms of course closures, shortening of delivery and hiking up of fees.

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

It is refreshing to hear a policy that understands the importance of TAFE and that it must be maintained as the preeminent public vocational education provider. The state Liberal's Smart & Skilled reform policy is deeply flawed and under it the very significant funding cuts have been decimating many course areas by shortening and dumbing down to meet even tighter and cheaper budgets. The real threat of trying to run it as a business and moves to privatise TAFE threatens the skills development base that the state economy relies upon. Let's hope this change in policy direction being put by Labor occurs.

Future of TAFE in light of past mistakes

Future of TAFE in light of past mistakes | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
THE recent article by John Ross on the viability of many TAFE colleges is a warning to politicians about previous decisions that were always destined to fail.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

This is correct, TAFE has been allowed to become a wasted but incredibly valuable asset. Yet it had been severely undervalued by recent Smart and Skilled policy which is very poor. Don Watts correctly identifies that the pollies keep getting this wrong. All the more reason that it must be fully funded and supported to continue to do its role well. Schools are not the best equipped places for VET in almost every way. The schools really struggle with this. So, as Don Watts indicates it is pretty simple. Stop the cuts to TAFE, fully fund it and stop decimating TAFE by siphoning the funding towards the profit based shonks in private training. We need to fully fund TAFE if we want real depth of skills development.

TAFE students record high satisfaction rating

TAFE students record high satisfaction rating | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
STUDENTS at TAFE NSW Riverina Institute are happy with the tuition they're receiving, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by management.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

So, these will be amongst the last group of students to sit for their HSC at TAFE Riverina, with the Institute revealing in March, despite the incredibly high satisfaction levels, that it planned to scrap the course!

Does this make sense at all? Scrapping the course because it has been so successful and has a record high satisfaction level!

Is is there some sort of collective neurosis going on with TAFE management, or is the problem with the state government's funding priorities?
