Queensland TAFE facilities up for grabs

Queensland TAFE facilities up for grabs | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
The Australian    |    4 November 2013 The Queensland government has begun the search for commercial tenants of the state's TAFE infrastructure, with survey of the state’s private registered traini...
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Politicians sell off our wonderful TAFEs and TAFE facilities without proper consultation with the people who elected them. They seem to be forgetting, perhaps conveniently, that the TAFE colleges and infrastructure are owned by the tax paying community, not individual private training businesses who stand to profit from access to these facilities, at the expense of the taxpayer. Who owns our TAFEs?

Restore funding to our public TAFE system

Restore funding to our public TAFE system | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
The Greens support a well funded quality public TAFE system. Sign the petition calling on the state government to reverse these devastating cuts to public TAFE funding and prioritise budget spending on VET to the public TAFE system.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:
The growth in enrolments in private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) has blown the VET budget, not public TAFEs. This is due to the disastrous market contestability introduced by the various state governments.

Bega TAFE forum to discuss Smart and Skilled impacts

Bega TAFE forum to discuss Smart and Skilled impacts | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
A FORUM discussing the impact of the Smart and Skilled policy on local TAFE campuses will be held on July 22 at Club Bega. (@AndrewConstance if Premier Baird can come to Manly why can't you come to this?
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The NSW government's Smart and Skilled policy will start on January 1, 2015, and this forum will discuss the impact of privatisation of funding, introduction of student fees and increasing debt.

So, where is Mr Constance the local member? Apparently, there are many questions to ask re his government's cuts to TAFE and how they will impact on students, teachers and their local community. You would think that Mr Constance would be keen to be at such an event.

John Robertson vows to trim TAFE fees: Budget reply based on protecting trades

“TAFE is not just a place people go to learn a trade, and then get a job.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

John Robertson seems to have a very good understanding of the importance of TAFE and the much broader effects it has on so many people.  The TAFE pathway needs to be strengthened and broadened not narrowed. The path is being laid with obstacles for people under the disasterous "Smart & Skilled" reform. At last a political leader who really "gets" TAFE!

Bega District News
SMART and Skilled is decimating TAFE as a skilled training organisation, according to the TAFE Illawarra Institute's Bega campus union rep David Grainger.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The trend under the NSW Govt's Smart & Skilled funding cuts is to continue the shortening of delivery, reduce student contact hours, and push more delivery into cheaper modes. Quality is suffering as a result of this dumbing down to meet cheaper budgets. Disgraceful and having detrimental effects on industries and communities. The worst is yet to come.

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:
Market-based education reform has become a mainstay of American politics — and it's a disaster waiting to happen. Have we had a public discourse and debate about whether we really want to go down this pathway in Australia? America is seeing the problems associated with this and is showing signs of moving away from burdening students with so much future debt.

Statistics show that a strong vocational education system will be required to help fill over 12 million vacancies by 2022.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

In the UK apparently many occupations tend to rely on vocational courses and qualifications to ensure that the workforce has the necessary skills, with a lower percentage of the workforce possessing degrees.

This report seems to be saying that .... "If the UK is to truly win the ‘global race’ in jobs and skills, a combination of strong vocational education and employer commitment to high-value business models will be necessary, alongside the continued strengthening of professional occupations".

TAFE fees have already risen while at the same time course have been cut and many shortened to save money. TAFE fees are set to rise significantly more from beginning of 2015 unless there is a change in state government policy. The Minister needs to go back to school and brush up on his math.
