Tuition starts to fall at private, for-profit colleges

Tuition starts to fall at private, for-profit colleges | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Private, for-profit colleges have joined the march of institutions that appear to be lowering their tuition as enrollment flattens out and families become increasingly price conscious.

Via Alberto Acereda, Ph.D., CBERZHSA
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Interesting findings emerging from the US. The "for-profit" college/training sector seem focused on making a profit so, they’re cutting tuition!  "There's  got to be something going on,” Gillen, cited in the report claims. “Either they’re trying to build their market share or they’re trying to undercut their competitors.” Read on.......a sign of tings to come here as we enter this brave new world of "marketisation" of TAFE - VET colleges here?

TAFE funds flowing: Vic premier - Yahoo!7 - Yahoo!7 News | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Extra funds for Victoria's TAFE system are now flowing, Premier Daniel Andrews says.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

So, will we see a similar rescue flow of funds to TAFE in NSW as now in Victoria? It's up to Mr Baird and the LNP in NSW to decide!

TAFE students in the dark over fees | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
The State School Teachers' Union has called on the government to release the TAFE fees schedule for next year.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Students not only have a right to know the TAFE course fees they will have to pay next year, but they need to know now in order to plan and decide whether they will be able to afford it.

TAFE cuts and fee increases could do a world of hurt - The Daily Telegraph | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it

TTHE NSW Teachers Federation is predicting “outrage” when South West Sydney Institute (SWSi) TAFE students attempt to enrol in classes next year and find courses in the system have greatly changed.

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

I feel heart sorry for so many students who are going to get a very rude shock when they come to enrol next year into a TAFE course. This is very unfair and heartless.

Role of vocational education and training 'under-recognised' in Europe - CIPD (blog) | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Human resources jobs, news & events
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Post-secondary vocational education and training is an “under-recognised, hidden world” in countries' skill systems across Europe according to a report from the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).  The considerable undervaluing and severe underfunding of TAFE, particularly by the various Liberal state governments in Australia, would seem to mirror this problem in Europe. Yet the OECD is attempting to address this problem. Are we?

Public funding for private providers should be redirected to TAFE | Lee Rhiannon | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
The Greens have welcomed the call from TAFE Directors for the Senate to block public funding being awarded to private education providers and want an end to the "contestability model" that has seen millions of dollars flow to private vocational...
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

TAFE right across the country has been severely undermined by allowing private for profit education providers to access public money.  Already thousands of TAFE jobs nationwide have been slashed as a result of this flawed privatisation. There have also been enormous fee increases with much more to come from beginning 2015, putting TAFE out of reach for very many.

Germany removes University Fees - what we Should Learn from That | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
All German Universities will be free of charge as of this year. The last German area to remove fees, Lower Saxony, has officially done so, in what promises
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

We should be doing exactly the same for all of our post school education systems. Universities and TAFE. we need to get rid of the obstacle to access and equity by removing fees not increasing them. Our economy would benefit greatly in the longer term if we did this.

Deeper TAFE cuts revealed in secret documents

Deeper TAFE cuts revealed in secret documents | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Victoria's TAFE system is facing deeper cuts than first thought, with secret documents revealing plans for a raft of campus and course closures.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Outrageous, shameful and incredibly myopic in regards to future skill needs. The cuts to TAFE must be very close to the bone by this stage.  It's quite telling that the depth if the TAFE cuts that the respective governments of each state are implementing are trying to keep very much a secret. It's a very bad look once the public see how deep they are and the effects on them directly in terms of course closures, shortening of delivery and hiking up of fees.

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Another example of more "corporate welfare" siphoning off public  taxpayer funding from TAFE to private "for profit" providers.  How much consultation with the tax paying public has occurred over these changed funding arrangements under Liberal state governments? Time for a real inquiry?

Not fair to TAFE | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
This government now wants to tell the people of NSW what a terrific training organisation TAFE is while at the same time it systematically does its level best to erode that very quality. Are they serious?
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

This is high level hypocrisy Mr Baird. You can't have it both ways to promote and destroy TAFE simultaneously. This is an attempted smokescreen to hide what his government is really doing to TAFE. NSW voters are not stupid.

TAFE teachers told to re-apply for jobs - Muswellbrook Chronicle

TAFE teachers told to re-apply for jobs - Muswellbrook Chronicle | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Some TAFE teachers have been told they'll have to re-apply for their positions under the NSW Government's "Smart and Skilled" shake-up.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The same pattern appears to be occurring here as has taken place at many other TAFE Institutes due to severe funding cuts under the state government's incorrectly named "Smart and Skilled" reforms.  Improvement in quality by cutting course delivery hours and condensing delivery modes is NOT the way. It is simply a way to find critical savings which must be found due to these severe funding cuts. The gap in funds are being handed to private RTOs for profit.  This taxpayer's money (ours) is being given away when it should go to the TAFE college that is bleeding a slow funding death.

Wakeling blasts Labor over TAFE - Bendigo Advertiser

Wakeling blasts Labor over TAFE - Bendigo Advertiser | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Victoria's Higher Education Minister has rejected critcism of TAFE.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

The reality is that TAFE is not being funded fully and under these "market driven" reforms significant amounts of taxpayer funds are being siphoned off to private for profit based RTOs at the expense of TAFE. On top of that far too many of these private RTOs are not delivering the goods or the quality. But then that's what market driven ideology produces. The pursuit of profit over sound skill acquisition and development to meet the real industry and community needs. Markets respond better to "wants" rather than real needs. This is the basic flaw. TAFE needs to be fully funded. Competition policy rather tha cooperative-collaboration policy is the real cause.
