Tuition starts to fall at private, for-profit colleges

Tuition starts to fall at private, for-profit colleges | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
Private, for-profit colleges have joined the march of institutions that appear to be lowering their tuition as enrollment flattens out and families become increasingly price conscious.

Via Alberto Acereda, Ph.D., CBERZHSA
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Interesting findings emerging from the US. The "for-profit" college/training sector seem focused on making a profit so, they’re cutting tuition!  "There's  got to be something going on,” Gillen, cited in the report claims. “Either they’re trying to build their market share or they’re trying to undercut their competitors.” Read on.......a sign of tings to come here as we enter this brave new world of "marketisation" of TAFE - VET colleges here?

Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

It is refreshing to hear a policy that understands the importance of TAFE and that it must be maintained as the preeminent public vocational education provider. The state Liberal's Smart & Skilled reform policy is deeply flawed and under it the very significant funding cuts have been decimating many course areas by shortening and dumbing down to meet even tighter and cheaper budgets. The real threat of trying to run it as a business and moves to privatise TAFE threatens the skills development base that the state economy relies upon. Let's hope this change in policy direction being put by Labor occurs.

Future of TAFE in light of past mistakes

Future of TAFE in light of past mistakes | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
THE recent article by John Ross on the viability of many TAFE colleges is a warning to politicians about previous decisions that were always destined to fail.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

This is correct, TAFE has been allowed to become a wasted but incredibly valuable asset. Yet it had been severely undervalued by recent Smart and Skilled policy which is very poor. Don Watts correctly identifies that the pollies keep getting this wrong. All the more reason that it must be fully funded and supported to continue to do its role well. Schools are not the best equipped places for VET in almost every way. The schools really struggle with this. So, as Don Watts indicates it is pretty simple. Stop the cuts to TAFE, fully fund it and stop decimating TAFE by siphoning the funding towards the profit based shonks in private training. We need to fully fund TAFE if we want real depth of skills development.

TAFE students record high satisfaction rating

TAFE students record high satisfaction rating | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
STUDENTS at TAFE NSW Riverina Institute are happy with the tuition they're receiving, according to the results of a recent survey conducted by management.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

So, these will be amongst the last group of students to sit for their HSC at TAFE Riverina, with the Institute revealing in March, despite the incredibly high satisfaction levels, that it planned to scrap the course!

Does this make sense at all? Scrapping the course because it has been so successful and has a record high satisfaction level!

Is is there some sort of collective neurosis going on with TAFE management, or is the problem with the state government's funding priorities?

TAFE ‘should brand as cheap airline’

TAFE ‘should brand as cheap airline’ | TAFE Vocational Education and Training | Scoop.it
TAFES have been told that they should take advantage of Coalition reforms by reinventing themselves as the discount airline of higher education.
Peter Haydon Druery's insight:

Why model TAFE on a "cheap" airline?  Such a low standard to set when TAFE's brand has been so strong!  It seems we are witnessing the desire to deliberately reduce quality DOWN to a standard, not up. It's the "Macdonaldisation" model. Sounds good on the marketing surface but it is driving down standards and quality. Cheap is the keyword in the ideology here. You get what you pay for.  Fund TAFE and stop these ridiculous cuts!  These ideologues do not have the right to experiment with the future for our youth and for those older who need access to affordable re-training.

On the other hand the discussion highlighted the obvious goodwill and value that is placed on TAFE courses by so many. Peter Haydon Druery's insight:
The question has been asked: "Will the proposed fee hikes for TAFE courses push more people away from further education?" The result? So far 98.53% of people surveyed by Fairfax media believe that it will.
