Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster

Apps in Education: SAMR Model Using iPad Apps Poster | Tablet Technology & Mathematics Education | Scoop.it

If the SAMR model is new to you here is a brief explanation of the four letters that make it up:

S- Substitution - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with no functional change.
A - Augmentation - Tech acts as a direct tool substitute, with functional improvement.
M- Modification - Tech allows for significant task redesign.
R - Redefinition - Tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.

The SAMR Model begins with Substitution (as in read the poster from the bottom up to more clearly understand the model), moving to Augmentation, then Modification and finishing with Redefinition.

The SAMR model is the work of Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D. from M.I.T. For more information on the SAMR model check out his website at http://hippasus.com/rrpweblog/.

For an indepth look you may want to check out the presentation from August 23, 2012 with the title "The SAMR Model: Background and Exemplars."

SAMR model list of suggested apps...

Shannon Soger's curator insight, January 7, 4:46 PM

Great poster, but it's important to note that what you're doing with the app will depend what SAMR level the lesson is. Keynote CAN be at Modification, but it can also be used as Substitution. For example, if a student is typing an "About Me" slide in Keynote, the technology is simply acting as a direct tool with no functional change in the task. However, if a student created an "About Me" presentation in Keynote that contained Photo Booth pictures of his/her family, and video of a family tradition that would bring the lesson to Modification. The student could not have "brought his/family" into his presentation without the use of the technology.

Three Ways To Look At The World As A Village

Three Ways To Look At The World As A Village | Tablet Technology & Mathematics Education | Scoop.it

"A couple of days ago I read an article by Ryann Warlickabout an infographic displaying the world as 100 people. I've seen infographics like this before and you probably have too. Ryann used the infographic as the basis for helping students think about identifying people that they can help. I encourage you to read the short article."

Richard Byrne provides three infographics that look at how one might view the world as 100 people. Why choose three infographics? We have many different learners in our classrooms and what works for one may not work for another...thus three infographics. You might use them to launch a discussion on how we perceive information or use them when teaching students about infographics and have them consider which they find best illustrates the information and discuss why it does.

Just in time for back-to-school!

Using our Canvas LMS, I also utilize the survey feature to obtain feedback after the first four night classes. There are five questions that help inform my teaching:

  1. The class met all stated learning objectives on the agenda.
  2. The learning exercises in this class supported the learning objectives
  3. The class provoked me to think about the topic in a new way.
  4. This class gave me practical information that I can use "as is" or adapt and use as a student or future teacher.
  5. What questions do you still have?

WARNING !
What works using a high quality Smartphone on a screen, might not work on every phone when printed. This is what makes QR Code design a really complex process. There are so many parameters that may corrupt the reading of a QR Code including: mobiles devices, operating systems, scanning softwares, image processes, printing machines, printing inks, printing papers, lightings…

We’ve been generating Eye-catching QR Codes since 2011. What is unique about our international patent pending process is the compliance to the ISO/IEC 18004 specifications. An ISO certified QR Code is a printed QR Code that has been tested, following a specific process. A rank of compliance is given to the QR Code. Some industries, such as transportation, will ask for a specific level to be reached (A, B, C).
An ISO compliant QR Code will be readable by any mobile device.
A non-ISO compliant QR Code might be readable…

The value of a software able to create Eye-catching QR Codes resides in its ability to maximize the number of mobile users able to read those QR Codes, either printed of paper, plastic, metal or glass.
