Principia Cybernetica Project Cybernetics and Systems Theory- VUB

This material was collected and is provided in the context of thePrincipia Cybernetica Project, but can be consulted independently of the rest of the project. Although there are relatively few research centers and even fewer educational programs devoted to the domain, a lot of activity is going on in between established departments. This is shown by the number of associations, conferences and journals active in the domain.

The best way of getting acquainted with the main ideas of cybernetics and systems theory is to read a few of the classic books or papersdefining the domain. Some of these books are freely available through our Principia Cybernetica library. Other, specific bibliographic references can be found in the library database of the Department of Medical Cybernetics and AI at the University of Vienna. There also exists more general reference material, including our own Web Dictionary of basic concepts.

Why Everyone Is Hating on IBM Watson—Including the People Who Helped Make It | Systems Theory | Scoop.it
You’ve probably seen the Watson commercials, where what looks like a sentient box interacts with celebrities like Bob Dylan, Carrie Fisher, and Serena Williams; or doctors; or a young cancer survivor. Maybe you caught the IBM artificial intelligence technology’s appearance in H&R Block’s Super Bowl commercial starring Jon Hamm. “It is one of the most powerful tools our species has created. It helps doctors fight disease,” Hamm says. “It can predict global weather patterns. It improves education for children everywhere. And now we unleash it on your taxes.”

The Basis of the Universe May Not Be Energy or Matter but Information

The Basis of the Universe May Not Be Energy or Matter but Information | Systems Theory | Scoop.it
Modern physics has hit a wall in a number of areas. Some proponents of information theory believe embracing it may help us to say, sew up the rift between general relativity and quantum mechanics. Or perhaps it’ll aid in detecting and comprehending dark matter and dark energy, which combined are thought to make up 95% of the known universe. As it stands, we have no idea what they are. Ironically, some hard data is required in order to elevate information theory. Until then, it remains theoretical.
