Foreign Support for Syrian Rebels Is Hindering Deal, Assad Says | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
A meeting between President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and the special United Nations envoy illustrated the wide gulf between the various sides in Syria’s conflict.
Corey Meehan's insight:

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad explained that no solution to the Syrian crisis would be reached while foreign assistance is given to the Syrian opposition.  “Only the Syrian people are authorized to shape the future of Syria," explains al-Assad.  Assad feels that a solution is not going to happen anytime soon as the terms of the conditions are heavily favored against him and incompatible with what he feels is good for Syria.

9 million Syrians need help before winter, U.N. says | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
BEIRUT — Syria's escalating humanitarian crisis has left more than 9 million people in the country in need of aid, according to United Nations estimates, and hopes were dashed Tuesday for peace talks this month to help end the nation's civil war.
Corey Meehan's insight:

With the winter months approaching, the U.N. has stressed an importance to sending relief to the 9 million Syrians (40% of the poplulation of Syria) that are living without the basic necessities needed to survive.  The main problem is access explains Jens Laerke, who is a spokesman for the U.N.  Both sides of the opposition are blaming one another for the obstruction of the relief shipments that are being sent to help the Syrian people.

Camryn Martinez's curator insight, December 16, 2015 7:03 PM

The U.N. says that 9.3 million, or about 40% of Syrian people lack basic necessities as winter approaches and agencies find it difficult to deliver aid inside the war stricken nation. The World Health Organization has confirmed 10 cases of polio among babies and toddlers in eastern Syria. 6.5 million Syrians have left there homes and are in need of necessities but also, 2.8 million Syrians have stayed in their homes, but still lack food and and medical care. The biggest obstacle to reaching refugees is the Syrians who are in rebel held areas. There are care packages made and ready for shipment but delivering them in a war zone is incredibly difficult and dangerous.

Envoys in Syria peace talks summit

Envoys in Syria peace talks summit | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
Talks are held in Geneva between UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and international diplomats to try to pave the way for a Syria peace conference.
Corey Meehan's insight:

Due to the alarming rise of Syrians in desperate need of aid, the U.N. has begun holding peace talks in an attempt to end the crisis in Syria.  However the two groups that can end the Syrian crisis are not present for the Geneva convention.  These two groups of course are the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition.  There is a stand still as of now, as the opposition declares it will attend no talks until Syrian President Bashar al-Assad steps down from power.  Since the begining of the conflict in early March 2011, it is estimated that nearly two million Syrians have fled Syria while it is estimated that almost 100,000 have been killed.

Secretary of state visits Paris and says Obama is yet to decide whether US will delay possible air strike until after UN report
Corey Meehan's insight:

Over the weekend the US secretary of defense John Kerry began a three day tour of Europe in hopes of rallying support behind international assistance in a possible coalition against Syria.  Kerry made some bold claims to French reporters as he compared Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to Saddam Hussein and Adolf Hitler.  European Union foreign ministries issued a report condemning an attack on Syria until sufficient evidence has been found confirming Syria’s use of chemical weaponry.  Kerry assured American allies that action against Syria was not only necessary for the security of America, but also for national security.

While the Geneva talks are at a stand still due to both parties neglecting to budge and concede to one another, there is still hope that the Syrian crisis can be solved through peaceful political means.  This is what French diplomat  Laurent Fabius believes and is looking to accomplish.  However Bashar al-Assad still believes it is up to the Syrian people to back down as he will not give up his reign of power over the country of Syria.

‘No Syria crisis solution without Iran’

‘No Syria crisis solution without Iran’ | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
A top member of the European Parliament says Syria crisis can't be solved without Iran's participation.
Corey Meehan's insight:

It is a commonly accepted theory that the only solution to the Syrian crisis, is a peaceful one.  Hannes Swoboda, a Senior member of the European Parliament believes this and describes the solution as a political mechanism as opposed to military strikes.  Swoboda continued in stating that Iran would be beneficial to the Geneva II as Iran shares similar interests with the European Union.  Iran has stated that it would be willing to attend the Geneva II if it were to get invited to attend, however would decline if there were any preconditions.

Riyadh 'fighting two wars in Syria' as new force Jaysh al-Islam excludes al-Qaida affiliates in bid to defeat Assad regime
Corey Meehan's insight:

The Syrian rebel fighters are receiving help from the Saudi Arabian government to help in the fight against Bashar al-Assad. The impact of this move from Saudi Arabia is still too early to judge it's impact, however time will tell.  The military style and force of the rebels is still not significant, but officials agree that this is a step in the right direction.  Saudi Arabia has been anti-Assad from the beginning and is unsatisfied with how the U.N. is handling the Syrian and Iran Crisis'.

International inspectors say they have been unable to reach two chemical weapons sites because they are in contested areas in Syria’s civil war.
Corey Meehan's insight:

The Syrian Government confirmed 23 chemical weapon sites, and U.N. inspectors have completely searched 21 with two to go.  The destruction of these sites along with weapons is expected to be completed by early November.  The State Department feels positive about the turnout and that the Syrian Government is doing everything in their power to accommodate the inspectors.  The last two sites are at risk for an attack on the inspectors, so the U.N. is taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of the inspectors.

War of words between Russia, U.S. on Syrian crisis heats up | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
The war of words between Russia and the United has heated up considerably of late over Syria.
Corey Meehan's insight:

Not since the Cold War has there been such bitter tension between the United States and Russia.  However the recent crisis in Syria along with the decision whether or not to take action against Syria has sparked old heated feelings.  The ramifications this debate will have on Syria has yet to be determined however.  Although tensions are high between the two nations, President Obama describes every meeting between the two leaders as “productive.”  Despite discussions being civil and “productive,” Russia is not sold on Syria’s use of chemical weapons on its own state.  Meetings between the two nations discussing the future of Syria will continue until one side gets what they want.

Syria explained: What you need to know

Syria explained: What you need to know | Syrian Crisis | Scoop.it
Reading the grim headlines out of Syria, it's easy to forget how we even got to this point in the first place. Here's a refresher course.
Corey Meehan's insight:

The crisis in Syria began in March of 2011 when a group of juveniles were arrested for writing political graffiti.  Following the arrests, protestors took to the streets and dozens of people were killed by Syrian security forces.  Angry Syrians called for Syrian President Bashar-al-Assad’s resignation.  Reluctant to give up power, al-Assad promised change and lifted the state of emergency law for the first time in 48 years.  four days following the lifting of the state of emergency law, the Syrian regime was sent into Daraa to establish order of the uneasy state.  The violence and turmoil has only escalated in the last two years and has become a “full-fledged civil war.”
