Syria Will be Free
Started March 2011 with the "Day of Dignity" The 2011–2012 Syrian uprising is an ongoing internal violent conflict in Syria. It is a part of the wider Arab Spring, a wave of upheaval throughout the Arab World. Public demonstrations across Syria began on 26 January 2011 and developed into a nationwide uprising. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, the overthrow of his government, and an end to nearly five decades of Ba’ath Party rule.

Looting in Paris as Europeans protest against Gaza conflict | Syria Will be Free | Scoop.it
A French rally against the deadly Israeli offensive in Gaza once again descended into chaos Sunday as protesters looted shops and riot police lobbed tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowds.

WasimE's insight:

The demonstration in the northern Paris suburb of Sarcelles is the third to have deteriorated in the space of eight days in a country that counts the largest Muslim population in western Europe and a huge Jewish community.

A decision by authorities to ban protests in areas deemed too sensitive has also garnered controversy as they took place anyway and turned violent, while authorised ones elsewhere in the country -- as well as in other cities across Europe -- were peaceful.

One of the best things about Baran’s work is that it’s constantly evolving and growing. As such a young photographer, she’s still trying out different styles and inspirations. Some of her images are dark, introverted and full of suffering, while others encapsulate the young and artistic photographer’s youth and joy. What’s most important, however, is that all of them are creative and very well-done.

Mathematical Art Presented by the American Mathematical Society

Mathematical Art Presented by the American Mathematical Society | Syria Will be Free | Scoop.it

"The connection between mathematics and art goes back thousands of years. Mathematics has been used in the design of Gothic cathedrals, Rose windows, oriental rugs, mosaics and tilings. Geometric forms were fundamental to the cubists and many abstract expressionists, and award-winning sculptors have used topology as the basis for their pieces. Dutch artist M.C. Escher represented infinity, Möbius bands, tessellations, deformations, reflections, Platonic solids, spirals, symmetry, and the hyperbolic plane in his works.

"Mathematicians and artists continue to create stunning works in all media and to explore the visualization of mathematics--origami, computer-generated landscapes, tesselations, fractals, anamorphic art, and more."

Could be a valuable resource for upper primary, in linking their mathematical learning to a more meaning context (in linking to their experiences of art in nature and in man-made objects around them) –

There are links to galleries & exhibitions – which could translate into a class excursion.

After a 1996 Mass Shooting, Australia Enacted Strict Gun Laws. It Hasn't Had a Similar Massacre Since.

After a 1996 Mass Shooting, Australia Enacted Strict Gun Laws. It Hasn't Had a Similar Massacre Since. | Syria Will be Free | Scoop.it
On April 28, 1996, a gunman opened fire on tourists in a seaside resort in Port Arthur, Tasmania. By the time he was finished, he had killed 35 people and wounded 23 more. It was the worst mass murder in Australia’s history.

Twelve days later, Australia’s government did something remarkable. Led by newly elected conservative Prime Minister John Howard, it announced a bipartisan deal with state and local governments to enact sweeping gun-control measures. A decade and a half hence, the results of these policy changes are clear: They worked really, really well.

At the heart of the push was a massive buyback of more than 600,000 semi-automatic shotguns and rifles, or about one-fifth of all firearms in circulation in Australia. The country’s new gun laws prohibited private sales, required that all weapons be individually registered to their owners, and required that gun buyers present a “genuine reason” for needing each weapon at the time of the purchase. (Self-defense did not count.) In the wake of the tragedy, polls showed public support for these measures at upwards of 90 percent.

What happened next has been the subject of several academic studies. Violent crime and gun-related deaths did not come to an end in Australia, of course. But as the Washington Post’s Wonkblog pointed out in August, homicides by firearm plunged 59 percent between 1995 and 2006, with no corresponding increase in non-firearm-related homicides. The drop in suicides by gun was even steeper: 65 percent. Studies found a close correlation between the sharp declines and the gun buybacks. Robberies involving a firearm also dropped significantly. Meanwhile, home invasions did not increase, contrary to fears that firearm ownership is needed to deter such crimes. But here’s the most stunning statistic. In the decade before the Port Arthur massacre, there had been 11 mass shootings in the country. There hasn’t been a single one in Australia since.

Jim, thanks for the Time story. No one in the U.S.A. is advocating confection of guns, just stronger regulation of them. No, this will not prevent killings by firearms, just severely limit the number of them. like drivers license and insurance on a car.

The tightly packed area of the 8 miles deep and 18 miles long Gaza Strip holds close to 2 million people that are kept behind walls and have to go through Jewish check points to be allowed to leave the area.  Over 50% of those people are under 24. You can't have a war there without killing and injuring children when you have a ratio 1 of every 2 people is a child. That is 50% chance of hitting a young person. The average age of the Gaza Strip is 17. Pro-life shouldn't end at birth.

WasimE's insight:

Netanyahu's government is launching attacks against Hamas, which Netanyahu insists is collectively responsible for a kidnapping that appears to have been conducted by rogue members. This makes it far more likely that full-on conflict will resume between Israel and Hamas, a dynamic that Netanyahu seems to prefer, because it favors Israel's overwhelming military strength and marginalizes Hamas politically. The last round of Israel-Hamas violence, in November 2012, killed dozens of civilians, almost all of them Palestinian.

"Transpartisan" is not a synonym for “neutral"

"Transpartisan" is not a synonym for “neutral" | Syria Will be Free | Scoop.it

by Eric Byler

A transpartisan approach to civic engagement steers clear of pre-packaged issue platforms. It encourages all Americans to put the facts first, and use their own intelligence in approaching complex issues.

Coffee Party USA is an invitation to participate in the democratic process with civility, with respect, and within a transpartisan framework. But let me make this clear: transpartisan is not a synonym for “neutral.” It is not a barrier to participation. It is not a constraint. It is a liberation.

Understandably, the word "transpartisan" attracts people who want to have a voice in our political process, but are turned off by the partisanship and ugliness with which it is waged. Often, they are conflict-averse, as most humans are. So, they seek a non-partisan or transpartisan group with which to organize. But they are often unable to take collective action because their desire to avoid conflict supersedes their desire to have impact.

To silence them, all that is required is a loud, aggressive, (and usually extreme) position. If it is repeated often enough, it is labeled “controversial” and “partisan,” and so too is anyone who challenges it. Thus, a conflict-averse citizen or organization is barred from taking a position on anything people scream about in front of cameras. If we allow this to govern our civic life, the result will be a political process dominated by people who thrive on conflict, who subscribe to dogmatic ideologies, and aren't able to use their intelligence to examine complex issues because they are too busy fighting.

Chasing the Middle

Another pitfall for active citizens who are conflict-averse is that they spend too much time and energy “chasing the middle.” If your only goal is to find the "center" between two opposing arguments, you are giving up your right to define your own values. Since the 2008 election, the Republican party has moved to the right, decrying health care and climate change policies they had once championed in order oppose President Obama. Does that mean that a "centrist" must re-calibrate his or her beliefs on those issues in order to find the new "middle?" As responsible citizens, we cannot allow someone else's electioneering strategy to alter who we are.

Let's be cautious of the convention that, "the right answer is always in the middle." Often, the right answer simply cannot be found on the line defined by the only two options we are given. Often, it's somewhere else entirely. [MORE]
