Why give away a million dollar idea? Why not? I learned this idea from friends, lost it and found it again from other friends this last Saturday. The idea ties browsers (Chrome, IE, whatever) to the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) via a simple App that uses schema Google makes available to anyone.

The net impact of this simple idea is Google becomes your partner in your company's search engine marketing. You get YOUR logo on Google when a "logged in member" is searching.

Three years ago there was too much "login friction", friction now solved by Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus "create an account with social" APIs. What do you owe me if you use Search Engine Gamification to make millions? Nothing but a donation to cancer research would be nice.

I also stand ready to help anyone create this tool FREE and bet I can enlist some of my friends too. Why give away a million dollar idea? SOT, Sign of the Times and not worth anything locked up in my head :).

Social and Mobile Set to Inspire Workplace Transformation

Social and Mobile Set to Inspire Workplace Transformation | SYLVIE MERCIER | Scoop.it

Business has forever been a world of change. If we think of it, change has been the only constant factor given the proliferation of so many technologies since the last couple of decades. While change has occurred in all aspects, the workplace is where some of the most glaring transformations have taken place. Let’s take a look at two of the biggest changes that are set to transform workplaces like never before.

Les réseaux nous aident-ils à gérer les transformations du travail ? | SYLVIE MERCIER | Scoop.it

We need open models, not just open data

We need open models, not just open data | SYLVIE MERCIER | Scoop.it

You can have all the crime data you want, all the real estate data you want, all the student performance data you want, all the medical data you want, but if you don’t know what models are being used to generate results, you don’t have much. You’re going to be showing black people homes in predominantly black neighborhoods not because you want to keep white neighborhoods pure, but because that’s where the model says they’re most likely to buy. You’re going to be stopping and searching more minority drivers without cause not because you’re prejudiced, but because the model says they’re more likely to be arrested for crimes. And if you stop more minority drivers, you almost certainly will arrest more minority drivers, so the model becomes self-fulfilling.

New MIT Media Lab Tool Lets Anyone Visualize Unwieldy Government Data | FastCoDesign.com

New MIT Media Lab Tool Lets Anyone Visualize Unwieldy Government Data | FastCoDesign.com | SYLVIE MERCIER | Scoop.it

In the four years since the U.S. government created data.gov, the first national repository for open data, more than 400,000 datasets have become available online from 175 agencies like the USDA, the Department of Energy, and the EPA. Governments all over the world have taken steps to make their data more transparent and available to the public. But in practice, much of that data--accessible as spreadsheets through sites like data.gov--is incomprehensible to the average person, who might not know how to wrangle huge data sets. Never-ending tables mean next to nothing to me, even if I know that they might be hiding some interesting relationship within their numbers, like how income stacks up with happiness.

To wade through what César Hidalgo, director of the Macro Connections group at the MIT Media Lab, calls "the last 10 inches" separating people from their government's incoherent tables and spreadsheets, Hidalgo turned to visualization. DataViva, a website Hidalgo and a few collaborators helped develop with the Brazilian state government of Minas Gerais, offers a wide array of web apps that turn those spreadsheets into something more comprehensible for the average user, whether that's a policy maker, someone working for the World Bank, an entrepreneur, or a student. The site, which officially launched last week, can be a bit overwhelming to navigate, but it has lofty goals: to visualize data encompassing the entire Brazilian economy over the last decade, with more than 100 million interactive visualizations that can be created at the touch of a button in a series of apps. The future of open government isn't just dumping raw datasets onto a server: It's also about making those datasets digestible for a less data-savvy public.

Project Big Data is an interactive tool which enables you to visualize and explore the funding patterns of over 600 companies in the Big Data ecosystem! It is based on the work I did for Project C (which you see and can read about here). The list of companies and their classification into categories is based on a dozen published sources and rough text analytics of the Crunchbase database. Crunchbase is a curated crowed sourced database of over 285k companies.

As for the data, there are 645 public & private companies in the data set. From Teradata and IBM to Actuate & Zoomdata. I began by harvesting data from Crunchbase by using their free API w/ Python. As of September, Crunchbase had 1250 funding events for 410 of the companies on my list. I've grouped these companies into 18 categories, allowing you to compare peers as well as trends across categories. Some of the categories are broken down further. For example, the tool allows you to differentiate between cloud-based and on premise solutions or SQL vs. NoSQL databases. I gathered additional data from a variety of sources. For example, LinkedIn was used to find the number of employees.

Digital tools can’t magically create connections

Digital tools can’t magically create connections | SYLVIE MERCIER | Scoop.it

One of the best perks of supporting the Los Angeles Central Library is advanced notice of the readings and talks coming through town as part of their ALOUD program. A few months ago, when I noticed that danah boyd was going to be talking about her recent book, “It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens,” with USC Professor and Connected Learning pioneer, Henry Jenkins, I snapped up a ticket. The talk took place at the end of July, and the ideas that these two scholars expressed about how young people are interacting with digital tools are still rattling around in my mind, inviting further exploration.

While boyd and Jenkins geared their talk largely toward parents, allaying their fears about the hours their children spent on social media sites they did not fully understand, I kept yearning for the conversation to turn its focus toward teachers and the ways that students’ digital lives could be translated into powerful learning opportunities. Formal educational sites were mentioned in passing when boyd referenced the “hierarchies of school” that dampened innovative digital learning in classrooms and relegated it largely to after-school spaces. While many scholars are wary about the role that classrooms can play as sites for powerful digital learning, citing the difficulties that come with bothersome constraints like standards and testing, I would like to re-introduce them to the dialogue and show how three of boyd and Jenkins’ main points could serve as catalysts for continued conversation among educators about helping students build personal, academic, and civic connections through digital tools.
