The Japanese have been using swords for thousands of years and are known to be masters in forging blades using traditional claying techniques that vary from region to region. These claying methods have been perfected to the point where the blades of the swords are extremely resilient to breaking and cracking, they are flexible, balanced and all because each section and side has a different strength high carbon steel in varying thicknesses to make the best blade possible. Obviously, the high quality standards that Japanese swords have to meet do not concerned only just to the blade, but instead it also includes the same standards with the handle, hilt, pommel plus the scabbard and wrapping. Even today the makers of Japanese swords put time into forging and designing top quality swords.

Japanese swords come in a variety of styles and it is obvious that much thought went into their design. There are three size variations of these swords; the first one is the tanto which is the short sword, wakizashi, the middle sized sword and the katana sword which is the large. The swords gained popularity during the Samurai times and that is when creativity was put into hiding them, such as with the bamboo stick katana. This sword can be purchased on many sites and is basically a katana with a bamboo handle and scabbard so that that the blade can’t be seen to make it appear as a walking stick.

The many well made Japanese swords of today, such as those from Hanwei or Thaitsuki Nihonto, are made with the same techniques and methods as those from centuries ago. These swords are great pieces to add to any collection, but also are perfect for those wanting a sword to practice with or use for a demonstration or even competitions that still take place in many martial arts disciplines. The fully functional Japanese swords can easily cut through objects without breaking and are often seen at martial art demonstrations or reenactments.

There are many high quality Japanese swords for sale that are reasonably priced, but in order to keep them in perfect condition it is important to understand the care necessary. The blade should not be stored away for long periods of time in a scabbard and it must be oiled every now and then or it will start to rust.
