America's "greenest street" provides a blueprint for sustainable urban development | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

A streetscape that includes natural landscaping, bicycle lanes, wind powered lighting, storm water diversion for irrigation, drought-resistant native plants and innovative “smog-eating” concrete has earned Cermak road in Chicago the title of “greenest Street in America” according to the Chicago Department of Transport (CDOT).

 

Opened in October 2012, the first phase two mile stretch is part of the Blue Island/Cermak Sustainable Streetscape project which was introduced in 2009 with the aim of reducing overall energy usage by 42 percent.

Conceived for the harsh, climatic extremes from ‘Lapland to Cape Horn and Aleutians to Auckland’ The D*Haus concept can respond dynamically to its environment by controlled adaptation to seasonal, meteorological and astronomical conditions.


D*Dynamic can ‘metamorphosize’ and transform itself into 8 Configurations, adapting from winter to summer, and day to night by literally moving inside itself. The thick heavy external walls unfold into internal walls allowing glass internal walls to become facades. Doors become windows and vice versa. The layout can be adapted to suit different living situations, as the design can change its shape and perspective both seasonally and throughout the course not only dawn to dusk but also twilight to sunrise....

One can rotate the house so that the user is in sunlight, while the house generates energy through solar panels. From a manufacturing point of view, the design deploys one set of materials to achieve so many possibilities...

This infographic focuses on the cities of London, New York, Vancouver, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Stockholm.

 

It’s hard to quantify what makes a city "greener" than any other metropolis, but there are some clues: car ownership, green space, bicycle usage, solar installations, recycling, and water consumption are just a few factors that create environmentally responsible cities.

An infographic from HouseTrip lays out what different cities are doing in an easy-to-read format. A handful of major world cities stand out as leaders. This infographic focuses on London, New York, Vancouver, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Stockholm; three of these cities made it into our top 10 smart cities list (two others were runners-up). Each of these cities have statistics worth mentioning. Amsterdam has one bike for every 0.73 people, Copenhagen has legislation requiring all new buildings to have green roofs (this will add 5,000 square meters of vegetation), and only 44% of New Yorkers own a car, compared to 95% of Americans overall.

Check out this map produced by the League of American Bicyclists and posted on the graphics site Visual.ly. The fonts are small - this image looks intended for a wall, not a computer - but look closely: the darker the state, the larger the share of total trips taken by bicycle, as opposed to driving, walking, or transit; the larger the maroon and yellow box, the larger the number of people commuting to work by bicycle. You can see that California, followed by Florida and New York, have the largest number of bike commuters. But, when you go by mode share - the portion of total trips taken by bike - the leading states appear to be Colorado, Oregon, and (improbably?) Montana. It is hard to tell for sure, but I believe the data came from multiple sources, including the US Census’s American Community Survey.

The map also indicates (in tiny print) the country’s ten cities with the highest mode share for bicycling. Unsurprisingly, Portland ranks first; but I might not have guessed that Minneapolis is second, especially given that city’s notorious winter weather. A larger version of the map contains additional graphics (two excerpted below, with small but readable fonts) that show the total numbers for the top ten cities, as well as some other interesting data, including overall spending on cycling infrastructure.

Portland International Jetport wins LEED Gold certification | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

Designed by Gensler, the expansion invoved construction of a new 160,000 square foot terminal, expanded security checkpoints and a sky bridge between the terminal and parking.

The design of the new terminal roots its inspiration to the natural beauty and resources of Maine. The terminal has extensively used timber, which is a rare element in airport architecture. The facility was built to embrace several sustainable elements, which consist of natural daylighting, FSC-certified glue laminated structural timbers, and low-maintenance, polished concrete floors.

The project has installed the state's largest geothermal system at the airport, which consist of 120 wells, which are 500 feet deep. The geothermal well assists the building to offset fuel costs by $150,000 a year.

The newest terminal of the airport is the second commercial airport in the US to be accredited with LEED certification.

H.2 Residence by 314 Architecture Studio | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

314 Architecture Studio designed the H.2 Residence in a suburb of Athens, Greece. The building consists of three residential areas; each residence has two small bedrooms and one master. Outside the building, an atrium provides light to secondary areas of the house while working as a funnel for the exit of hot air to reduce energy consumption during the summer months.

The bioclimatic design and the positioning of the building with fixed louvers and the design of their exposures saves natural heating energy, while the connection between the building and water creates a natural cooling. The houses are equipped with underfloor heating systems and the materials used in floors and walls are natural. The colors and materials of this building are used to create a sense of harmony, modernity and at the same time luxury while the sculptures of Gianni Aspra dominated the walls of living rooms creating emotions and abstract mood. Finally the roof gardens with glass stairwells offer unlimited view of Argosaronic...

This is going beyond Mazdar in Dubai.  The reality is that we need to transform existing cities since starting from scratch is rare.  We need to retrofit cities more than build new ones, but still it is interesting.

Bioclimatic House in the Canary Islands, Spain

Bioclimatic House in the Canary Islands, Spain | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

This bioclimatic house, by Estudio José Luis Rodríguez, is a self-sufficient structure integrated into the terrain of the Canary Islands, a landscape characterized by a continuous terracing of the extreme topography.

In response to this site, the design features a basalt stone wall that supports a light structure of plywood, galvanized steel walls and glass.

The building's orientation is determined by solar radiation; photovoltaic panels produce electricity, in order to achieve zero carbon emissions. The living area is connected to the outside with a space that is protected from sun and wind, while a wall located in the sleeping area to the north has a high thermal mass for passive temperature control.

The design also aims to reduce its ecological footprint on the use of materials and construction systems by using local materials (basalt wall insulation covered with volcanic lapilli, for example), environmentally certified materials and no harmful elements, such as VOC compounds in synthetic paints and varnishes.

In this project, the realization of a living space that suits the topography, the vegetation, and the tropical climate required the knowledge gained from the study of vernacular architecture. The “Culata Jovai” or “House of Confronted Rooms” is a bioclimatic solution to incorporating traditional ways of living harmoniously with the environment in Paraguay. It constitutes a base typology for a reinterpretation of the vernacular, according to new functional programs, needs of symbolic representation and new technologies, framed in a sustainable project.

With the inclusion of green roof, the original space of vegetation displaced by the construction was recovered, also reducing the heat gain due to the thermal inertia of the underground spaces, therefore reducing greatly the conventional energy consumption of homes.

With water levels set to rise, how will buildings adapt to this changing environment? Here's a roundup of some innovative solutions.

 

One of the many problems that will accompany this catastrophe is a rise in sea levels due to the melting polar ice caps. Coastal cities and towns are obviously the ones under the greatest threat but so are low-lying lands. We could be saying goodbye to the Netherlands as we know it. So, unless our next evolutionary step is to grow gills then we’re going to have to face up to the facts and find new ways to live within our watery environment.

Before we all run for the hills there are ways that architecture can integrate the design of buildings into their aquatic surroundings, giving us the possibility of living with this new world. So, with that in mind, lets take a look at some potential architectural solutions...
