“This planning proposal seeks to determine community and bio-diversity from its historical pattern. The concept finds fundamental inspiration in the strong historical identity of the local railway line, and the historic identity of industrialization of Kaohsiung city.

Inspired by the culturally and biologically responsive between the new city urban fabric and existing old town Yen Chan district, the guiding principle of the master plan is to inspire a meaningful sense of community and a shared commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

The proposal also introduces a series of urban agriculture farming and integrated parks. The strategy is to infiltrate and to conceal the community and biological diversity from the nearby Wan Shu Mountain. It also reflects the historical transformation of Kaohsiung city from industrial city to a contemporary cityscape.”

A Martifer Solar associou-se ao projecto “Casas em Movimento”, como parceiro tecnológico de solução solar fotovoltaica. O projecto, desenvolvido pelo arquitecto Manuel Vieira Lopes, da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, consiste num protótipo de casa giratória, sustentável e auto-suficiente, que aproveita o potencial solar para satisfazer as necessidades energéticas do dia-a-dia.

A ideia é tirar partido das mais avançadas tecnologias e ser um exemplo no campo da sustentabilidade energética e no sector das energias renováveis, em particular na energia solar fotovoltaica.

Interagindo com a natureza, a casa acompanha o movimento do sol ao longo do dia, tirando o máximo proveito desta fonte de energia, através dos módulos fotovoltaicos instalados na cobertura. A electricidade gerada pode, depois ser utilizada para auto consumo, como o carregamento das baterias de um carro eléctrico, ou para injecção na rede pública.

More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and countries such as India and China are in need of hundreds of additional cities to accommodate growing populations. People in many cities suffer from inadequate transportation, sub-standard buildings, lack of sanitation, and poor public safety, highlighting the need for sustainable and livable urban planning. Information and communication technology (ICT) can be a useful tool in helping cities improve their safety, cleanliness, and sustainability.

 

ICT not only contributes to sustainable urban initiatives, but also encourages more environmentally conscious consumer choices. In Singapore, for example, commuters can use mobile phones to avoid hours in traffic by accessing data mapping tools that display traffic and provide alternate travel routes. Commuters can also plan trips on public transportation and be notified of delays or changes in service.

Climate Change News: Researchers Suggest Stratosphere Affects Deep Seas | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

According to a new study, periodic changes in winds 15-to-30 miles above the surface can severely impact the Earth’s climate. The research from the University of Utah suggests that the wind changes in the stratosphere can change mile-deep ocean circulation patterns in addition to influencing the seas in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The research team led by Professor Thomas Reichler stated that they knew that what happened in the stratosphere affects the action going on in the troposphere, up to six miles above the Earth. In the study, the team also noted that they were aware of the global circulation patterns in the oceans. Reichler said that the patterns caused by variations in saltiness and water temperature impacted the climate on a global basis.
"It is not new that the stratosphere impacts the troposphere," said Reichler. "It also is not new that the troposphere impacts the ocean. But now we actually demonstrated an entire link between the stratosphere, the troposphere and the ocean."
Using weather observations and 4,000 years of supercomputer weather simulations, Reichler and his team showed a connection between the polar vortex (changes in stratospheric wind patterns) and changes in the deep sea movement patterns.
Of the changes in the deep sea movement patterns, one significant change occurs during stratospheric sudden warming events. These events happen when temperatures rise and when polar vortex winds above 80 miles per hour weaken or change direction while circling the Arctic region. Lasting for a period up to 60 days, these winds have the ability to extend from 15 miles up in the stratosphere to 30 miles above the surface, going past the stratosphere's plateau. Another change includes the differing speeds of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which in turn, operates as an assembly line moving water throughout the Earth. Reichler said that using these changes and the decade-scale effect, are important for creating computer models of decade-to-decade forecasts so that the changes are distinct from global warming.

This idea is pretty cool. With all the pollution we have in the world today we need to start replanting the trees and plants we have tore down. Especially since more people are wanting to live in the big cities making the cities larger decreasing on our natural environment.

DSC modules use titanium dioxide — the same stuff in old-school sunscreen — to receive electrons from a dye when it's struck by sunlight. They're not terribly efficient, but they're so inexpensive that as the technology matures it's anticipated that they will approach the cost of fossil fuels for production of electricity.

Complessivamente, il programma si è rivelato uno straordinario successo con più di 147 milioni di dollari in riduzione dei costi totali grazie all'efficienza raggiunta dagli hotel, come riportano i dati elaborati da LightStay.

 

Inoltre, Hilton Worldwide ha raggiunto il suo obiettivo di ridurre la produzione totale di rifiuti del 20% in cinque anni, con ben due anni d'anticipo.

 

L'azienda fa inoltre sapere di essere nelle tempistiche previste per quanto riguarda la riduzione del consumo energetico, dell'emissione di CO2 del 20 per cento, nonchè del consumo idrico del 10 per cento.
