Timeline: Extreme Weather Events in 2012

Timeline: Extreme Weather Events in 2012 | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

Over the past several months, extreme weather and climate events in the form of heat waves, droughts, fires, and flooding have seemed to become the norm rather than the exception. In the past half-year alone, millions of people have been affected across the globe – from Europe suffering from the worst cold snap in a quarter century; to extreme flooding in Australia, Brazil, China, and the Philippines; to drought in the Sahel. Records have been broken monthly in the continental United States, with the warmest spring and 12-month period experienced this year and severe fires and drought affecting large swaths of the country.

So how bad has it really been? Below we have put together a timeline of extreme climate and weather events in 2012. We have by no means attempted to be comprehensive in listing events, but have aimed to include some of the most significant occurrences this year. Please let us know through the comment section if we are missing some, as we plan to update the timeline periodically.

Focado no cliente, Itaú anuncia R$ 10,4 bi para TI

Focado no cliente, Itaú anuncia R$ 10,4 bi para TI | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

Benefits of these structures are numerous. Studies in Oregon demonstrated that non-vegetated areas can exceed temperatures of 50 °C (122 °F) in July while vegetated areas remain at 25 °C (77 °F) (Luvall and Holbo, 1989). Green walls have been shown to reduce temperature fluctuations at the wall surface from 5 to 30 °C (41 to 86 °F). Street-level air pollution can be reduced by as much as 40 percent for nitrogen dioxide and 60% for particulate matter at the source, and by as much as 75 percent downwind of large green walls. Green walls that use appropriate plants can act as natural “bio-filters” for some volatile organic carbons and other pollutants when implemented as part of an integrated building strategy. Other benefits can include stormwater runoff reduction, building energy efficiency, improved interior air quality, urban agriculture, on-site waste water treatment, increased biodiversity, LEED credits, marketing and green branding, building facade protection, aesthetic improvement, noise reduction, local job creation, and ease of construction (interested in making a living wall?). In addition, vegetation in urban areas has been shown to increase mental well being, biodiversity and residential property values.

Stratospheric Winds High in the sky may affect something low in the deep ocean.

Stratospheric Winds High in the sky may affect something low in the deep ocean. | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

This is far from an intuitive deduction. A University of Utah study suggests something amazing: Periodic changes in winds 15 to 30 miles high in the stratosphere influence the seas by striking a vulnerable Achilles heel in the North Atlantic and changing mile-deep ocean circulation patterns, which in turn affect Earth’s climate.

"We found evidence that what happens in the stratosphere matters for the ocean circulation and therefore for climate," says Thomas Reichler, senior author of the study published online Sunday, Sept. 23 in the journal Nature Geoscience.
Scientists already knew that events in the stratosphere, 6 miles to 30 miles above Earth, affect what happens below in the troposphere, the part of the atmosphere from Earth’s surface up to 6 miles or about 32,800 feet. Weather occurs in the troposphere. It is also where humans for the most part live.
Researchers also knew that global circulation patterns in the oceans — patterns caused mostly by variations in water temperature and saltiness — affect global climate.
"It is not new that the stratosphere impacts the troposphere," says Reichler, an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Utah. "It also is not new that the troposphere impacts the ocean. But now we actually demonstrated an entire link between the stratosphere, the troposphere and the ocean."

Using Information and Communications Technology to Create Cohesive, Sustainable Cities

Using Information and Communications Technology to Create Cohesive, Sustainable Cities | Digital Sustainability | Scoop.it

More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and countries such as India and China are in need of hundreds of additional cities to accommodate growing populations. People in many cities suffer from inadequate transportation, sub-standard buildings, lack of sanitation, and poor public safety, highlighting the need for sustainable and livable urban planning. Information and communication technology (ICT) can be a useful tool in helping cities improve their safety, cleanliness, and sustainability.

ICT not only contributes to sustainable urban initiatives, but also encourages more environmentally conscious consumer choices. In Singapore, for example, commuters can use mobile phones to avoid hours in traffic by accessing data mapping tools that display traffic and provide alternate travel routes. Commuters can also plan trips on public transportation and be notified of delays or changes in service.
