World’s First Vertical Forest, Now Under Construction - DesignTAXI.com

World’s First Vertical Forest, Now Under Construction - DesignTAXI.com | Sustainism | Scoop.it

In Milan, Italy, architects are tackling the problems of the concrete jungle by building a vertical forest in the city.

JvP: Every flat should have a balcony, every balcony a tree, every building a vertical forest, every city disappearing walls, every view from the sky green hues and earth tones, spicy fields between the aquamarine and snowy plains.

The woman who challenged plastics | This gives me hope

The oldest shopping bag I carry with me every time I go to the store, ironically is made of woven plastic thread, and about 40 years old. This shows both quality and faults of the practically indestructable material. If well made/well used it will last a life time, but it will also remain in our eco-system indefinitely.

Other, also old bags, some of them inherited from my mother, are made of canvas, with sturdy leather straps. Add to that the re-usable bags sold by our co-op PCC and Trader Joe's, and you can see I won't have a problem with the new rules that will take effect in Seattle this year regarding plastic bags.

This Gives Me Hope Editor: "It was back in 2007, before many of us had given more than passing thought to the bags in which we carried around our purchases. Rebecca Hosking was a free..."

A Home Without Heating in Western France

A Home Without Heating in Western France | Sustainism | Scoop.it

FROM UTOPIA TO REALITY

De l'utopie à la réalité

Twenty years ago I rented a room in a house in Austin Texas that had neither heat nor Air Conditioning. The owner/ designer/ builder had created rooms in the shape of beehive cells. By having the heat of one regular 60 W. lamp and a person's body heat bounce of the walls, a room would be warm enough, even in winter.

The house was build around an air shaft which, together with strategically placed openings in all the rooms took care of air circulation, thus AC wasn't necessary either. And this in the swampy moist heat of central Texas!

What follows is the original text with this re-scoop.it!

La proprietere designed each room in the shape of a beehive cell. By having the heat of one regular 60 W. lamp and a person's body heat bounce of the walls, a room would be warm enough, even in winter. @Judith : I translate (merci)
