I Haven't Made Any Trash In 2 Years. Here's What My Life Is Like

I Haven't Made Any Trash In 2 Years. Here's What My Life Is Like | Sustainism | Scoop.it
My name is Lauren. I'm a 23-year-old girl living in NYC and I don't make trash. For real. No garbage bin, no landfill. Nada. I know what you are thinking. This girl must be a total hippie. Or a
Judith van Praag's insight:

My husband and I generate very little garbage, all kitchen scraps go in the city's yard waste (not creating our own compost right now, we ad to the city's compost heap for parks & gardens city wide), but we still put out cardboard boxes and some plastic wrap and meat, fish and chicken trays.

Reading Lauren Singer's post made me remember how my parents and I "went back to nature" in 1963, and how we didn't even have garbage pick-up where we lived. My parents recycled pretty much everything, and my father made potions and lotions from ancient recipes.

Zero garbage sounds great, but I know I'd be lying if I claimed we could go without pick-up, but at least we've got a small garbage bin, that we don't even fill every week. And when we picked up our share of compost from the City, I knew chances were some of our own kitchen scraps were part of our batch or at least another citizen.

McLeod’s Community Garden : Bette Midler's Green Thumb Revitalizes Community Gardens

McLeod’s Community Garden : Bette Midler's Green Thumb Revitalizes Community Gardens | Sustainism | Scoop.it
Tour eight amazing public spaces transformed by the actress’s New York Restoration Project
Judith van Praag's insight:

Another reason to love the Divine Ms. Bette Middler. I learned about her endeavors around the time that I was gardening at one of Seattle's community gardens or P-Patches, named after the farmer Picardo who donated his land to the city under the condition that people would get to grow vegetables and such for their own and the community's benefit.

Since growing vegetables without pesticides is practically impossible if your neighbors are using chemicals on their plot, gardening at the Seattle P-Patches would across the board be an organic endeavor.

As a native Dutch speaker, who a long time ago was wed to a scientist specialized in organic chemistry, "organic" gardening seemed an unnecessary redundancy, how could you garden other than organically, I thought. Perhaps natural would be more to the point.

Natural gardening? What's that?

Never mind. Take in what can happen when people take it upon them to clear wasteland and make it into a space with natural beauty, albeit cultured or cultivated.

Challenge: Bring Your Own Shopping Bags - hetkanWel.nl

Challenge: Bring Your Own Shopping Bags - hetkanWel.nl | Sustainism | Scoop.it

Okay, so you can't read the article, unless you use some kind of translator. But the drift of the story is: Stop polluting Mother Earth, invest in long lasting shopping bags and don't buy into the "take it easy" attitude. We're ruining our very own world, filling oceans with plastic crap, killing birds and other wildlife that swallows the products of our lazy lifestyle.

I've got one old bag I've had since I was eighteen, and that dearies, was many summers ago.

Challenge: Get a bag that lasts, and buy bulk when you can.

Comfort and organic sustainability

Comfort and organic sustainability | Sustainism | Scoop.it
The need for a sustainable development began to grow and resources began to diminish in quantity and value.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Chris Downs came to my attention thanks to my interest as a writer in his Kindle book on How to Grow Heirloom Tomatoes.

Note that I stopped growing tomatoes in 1989, after I became intolerant to them, both raw and cooked. Just a bite from the fruit I'd loved since childhood and my cheeks would swell with hives, turning bright red, like the culprit itself.

The only tomatoes I can eat since, come from a can, or a jar, but I'm glad I can still eat enjoy my tomato sauce based recipes.

To get back to Downs, he blogs for a magazine named Grit, subtitled: Rural American Know-How.

As the DutchessAbroad I'm all for passing on my Dutch Heritage Know-How, and having married a Texan, Grit and me seem like a good match. As we say in the Netherlands, you never know how a cow catches a rabbit. Who knows what will come next.

P-Patch Community Gardens | Department of Neighborhoods for the City of Seattle

P-Patch Community Gardens | Department of Neighborhoods for the City of Seattle | Sustainism | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:

My Chinese doctor suggested I'd start gardening. To sow seeds and see them germinated, and grow into mature plants would be good for me. We lived in an apartment and had no garden, so I planted green pole beans in a big pot on the outdoors gallery.

Before long I had my first garden in Seattle, a P-Patch plot of 10' x 10' feet. The first year I drafted a garden design, sifted the soil for rocks and pebbles, lay those in a circle, my garden path, and planted herbs, and flowers.

Two years later I graduated to a 10' x 20" plot and added vegetables, and potatoes to my earlier crop. My husband got involved, and even our puppy helped, digging up quack grass roots.

Gardening is a healing activity, it can return your trust in nature, in the cycle of life.

Natural Cures Not Medicine: Heat Your Room For 15 Cents a Day | Sustainism | Scoop.it
The following video shows us an ingenious way to heat a whole room for under 15 cents or possibly even cheaper
Judith van Praag's insight:

Reading the headline only, I was reminded of the landlord of a house in Austin TX who claimed the cells in his beehive house could be heated with one bare bulb and body heat alone. He was right. Whether the natural A.C. (we call it draft in the Netherlands) would keep the whole house cool during AusTx summers I can't tell you, I left at the end of Spring. This flower pot plan looks solid, perhaps even good enough for the fire chief?

'Dit gaat helemaal fout'. | Sustainism | Scoop.it

Why a link to Dutch anthropologist/ journalist Luyendijk about The City (London's Wall Street) and the next world crisis on the Sustainism page? Because the answer to some of the problems is growing your own food. This may seem simplistic, but when citizens don't have power over what happens in the higher echelons, the very best thing they can do is take care of their own, and their first needs by growing their own food.

In writers' circles doom thinking started much earlier than today, what Luyendijk shares will not come as a surprise to those Americans who are already growing their own food.

I may no longer have an organic P-Patch (community garden) plot, my forte lies in preserving fruits, I bet I can barter jam and chutney for potatoes and vegetables.

Separately I'll link to Luyendijk's blog for the Guardian, check out adjacent scoops.
