Manfred Borer: Creating Lasting Change Through Public Private Partnerships

Manfred Borer: Creating Lasting Change Through Public Private Partnerships | Sustainable Agriculture | Scoop.it

Photo: cocoa farmers participating in training workshops as part of the SCPP in Indonesia

Swisscontact promotes economic, social and environmental sustainability by supporting people to develop the skills they need to contribute to local commercial life.

For over fifty years, we’ve found that people possessing relevant market skills are those who have the greatest capacity to succeed in, and help transform, local economies.

As an organisation we’re best known for our training programs that provide rural producers, micro- and small business owners, young entrepreneurs, and women, with the capacities to improve their livelihoods and incomes.

We believe that education, training, and skills development - especially in good agricultural practices in rural areas in developing countries - have the greatest potential to address issues related to food security, resiliency, health and nutrition, and community and economic development.

Food Security Beyond Calories: The Role of Industry

Food Security Beyond Calories: The Role of Industry | Sustainable Agriculture | Scoop.it
31 May 2013, LinkedIn Blog, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the Board, Nestle -- "n my last post on food security mainly in developing countries I outlined a more comprehensive view on food security – with five main pillars, namelyproducing enough food, generating income for rural communities, affordability of food, quality, andavailability whenever, wherever and however required.I stressed the key role of governments – in this follow-up post I would like to highlight some examples from Nestlé of what the role for industry – both on its own and in partnership – might be. A few initial words to put things into perspective: Nestlé has a global presence with its products and factories, and is the biggest company worldwide in the fast moving consumer goods sector. But despite its size the company only has a 1.5% share in the highly competitive global food market. We are fully integrated in local food systems, not producing the food but transforming it, so it becomes digestible (e.g., fermentation, milling) or accessible and trusted by consumers wherever they are (safety, packaging, logistics, etc.). Our focus is increasingly on Nutrition, Health and Wellness; we want to provide higher value-added in our products, also those with lower prices in our popularly positioned offer. We are renovating products, carrying out research and development, and encouraging healthy eating habits early on in life. Not only does this bring knowledge to our businesses, upstream and downstream partnerships, but to our competitors too.
