Galápagos rebellion against foreign investment in hotels, golf courses, luxury tourism | Sustainable Travel and Tourism | Scoop.it
Oil spillages from cargo ships and tourist boats are becoming more frequent. An estimated 18,000 birds are killed each year by vehicles - and there are only 1,000 mangrove finches left.
TransEco Services's insight:

Let's hope that the Galápagos Islands will be reinstated as a UNESCO world heritage site in danger. The Islands' future doesn't look good under this law....

Conservation gets low share of tourist income

Conservation gets low share of tourist income | Sustainable Travel and Tourism | Scoop.it
Tourism in protected areas generates US$600 billion a year, but only US$10 billion goes towards conserving them.
TransEco Services's insight:

Direct spending by tourists in Latin American protected areas averages $311 compared to $103 per visit to North American parks. It's not enough to bring tourists to "eco" resorts. What matters most is whether the money tourists spend actually makes a difference in conserving biodiversity and ensuring local communities are not only directly involved in managing tourist activities but, more importantly, retain the revenue generated by these activities.

Can Crowdfunding Save an Endangered Nomadic Culture?

Can Crowdfunding Save an Endangered Nomadic Culture? | Sustainable Travel and Tourism | Scoop.it

Eagle hunting is a way of life for many in Kyrgyzstan. The central Asian country was founded on the ideals of a nomadic culture, where natives live in yurts in the countryside and support themselves with eagles, stock raising, tourism, and craft-making. But Kyrgyzstan’s nomadic culture is on the verge of extinction. The country of more than five million people has no natural resources like oil and gas to claim as its own and meager wages are earned by the continued export of items brought in from China. Raising livestock is unsustainable in the face of climate extremes and animal illness. A group has initiated a crowdfunding project on IndieGogo to "develop the tourism sector and support the handicraft production in local, nomadic communities.

TransEco Services's insight:

This looks like a good cause. If you're like me and you've seen pictures of the famed eagle hunters of Kyrgyzstan, please consider ways you can contribute toward helping this culture survive. How about a trip to Kyrgyzstan?

Is sustainable travel going mainstream?

Is sustainable travel going mainstream? | Sustainable Travel and Tourism | Scoop.it

When TripAdvisor started rating its hotels for their environmental credentials, it seemed clear the public’s attitude to travelling ‘green’ was shifting. Are we getting to a tipping point where ‘travel’ and ‘sustainable’ are becoming concepts that naturally go hand in hand?

It’s not just ethical businesses that are thriving: so, too, are many of the destinations they operate in, and the causes that they support. For example, a recent government census of India’s tiger population reported that their numbers rose 30% between 2011 and 2014; Ranthambhore’s tiger population has doubled since 2005. Julian Matthews, chairman of Travel Operators for Tigers, is cautious not to attribute this entirely to tourism, but says it’s no coincidence that large tiger population increases have been seen in parks with correspondingly large visitor numbers.

TransEco Services's insight:

Thanks to TripAdvisor, sustainable tourism is in the limelight. It's no surprise that conservation of habitats and species can be successful, as long as sustainable tourism is done in the right way. Keep in mind that many tourism service providers that label themselves as an "ecotourism" establishment may not adhere to sustainable practices or adhere to the stringent monitoring and enforcement of sustainability criteria that is required of sustainable tourism service providers.
