A Sustainable Floating House Concept

A Sustainable Floating House Concept | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it

Designed by Singapore-based architect Dymitr Malcew, the sustainable floating house is the perfect way to get away from all the daily stresses one experiences living in an urban environment.

This house literally floats on the water, and thanks to the floor to ceiling windows adorning the dwelling, residents get to fully enjoy these 360-degree ocean views from sun up to sunset. The home was created for French firm H2ORIZON, and was constructed from sustainable materials.

The residence is spacious with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room kitchen, and terrace. With the ability to gently float through the water, you’ll be able to enjoy everything nature has to offer without causing any disruption...

Via Lauren Moss
Norm Miller's insight:

It's beautiful but seems to belong more on a stable lake than an ocean or any place with severe weather issues.

Solar panels can power the world – MIT study

Solar panels can power the world – MIT study | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
An MIT report has found that regular solar panels like the ones used today could supply much of the world with power. They believe terawatts of energy could be produced by 2050 and say that investment, not technology, could be the biggest hurdle.
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:

Efficient solar panel technology is already here and with battery technology improving, solar power should be one of the main sources of renewable energy we use to become energy independent.

How Do CRE Building Owners Cope With California’s Drought?

How Do CRE Building Owners Cope With California’s Drought? | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
With California facing one of the state’s most severe droughts on record, a State of Emergency was declared last January by Governor Jerry Brown. How much of an impact are the water restrictions having on commercial property operation and management?
Norm Miller's insight:

For the most part we don't use separate water metering so multi-tenant buildings cannot be broken into separate charges for water/sewer.  The only real strategy is to replace old fixtures, use native landscaping, re-use gray water and consider rain capture.

A two-storied villa has been built in just three hours in Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province, thanks to three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, Jiangnan Times reported on Monday
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:

The High Tech Farms Where Our Future Food Will Grow in Nothing But Air

The High Tech Farms Where Our Future Food Will Grow in Nothing But Air | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
If our planet is going to support an extra four billion people by the end of the century, we'll need to find some creative new ways to feed ourselves. One option would be to turn buildings into farms and grow our crops in the air. Another: To install networked food computers in everybody's home. I'm not even kidding.
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:

The idea of creating "city farms" is where crops will grow aeroponically under controlled light and air. It'll be interesting if this concept catches on and one day these city farms become a new property type in commercial real estate.

WeberHaus :: Home

WeberHaus :: Home | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
WeberHaus prefabricated houses stand for environmentally-friendly construction an is one of Germanys leading house builders for over 55 years. We use all materials efficiently, avoid hazardous substances and conserve natural resources, providing a safe and healthy living environment. These principles are at the heart of all our homes.
Norm Miller's insight:

Weberhaus is a factory based home builder.  They can build 3 homes a day in a factory and set one up on site in one day.  The key is that they build entire wall systems with electrical and plumbing all pre-inserted.  Secondly the homes are super efficient with huge thick walls of 30 centimeters with materials they have developed, lightweight wood particles and dense interior styrofoam.  Then they use passive solar design, with appropriate overhangs, triple glazed windows, solar panels on roofs and you have a home that requires very little energy.  Such homes are built to much more precise standards than typical stick built homes but THEY WOULD NOT PASS US Building Codes since we have an antiquated system forcing construction in stages with inspections.  Such a firm is needed in the US because it is more efficient as a builder and produces a much better product than the typical US residential builder.  Time for some disruption in the US home building system which has changed little in three decades?

France decrees new rooftops must be covered in plants or solar panels

France decrees new rooftops must be covered in plants or solar panels | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
All new buildings in commercial zones across the country must comply with new environmental legislation
Norm Miller's insight:
I'm not sure I like the idea of mandating a specific technology. Why not just mandate some efficiency level or consumption max at peak? This would be like saying you must have fluorescent lights when LEDs might be just around the corner. This is why the government should not interfere with specifics into the energy market.

It'll be interesting if Amazon succeeds in either of these initiatives and as a result, it starts leasing more retail real estate.

As the SF per employee continues to shrink, open/collaborative workspaces and telecommuting options are becoming more popular, creating demand for hoteling, or reservation-based unassigned seating of corporate office space.

LiquidSpace, a service that connects corporate real estate owners with temporary renters who want to lease excess office space on a short-term basis, has been dubbed the 'Airbnb of work spaces'.  These types of services will help maximize the office space utilization rate.
