"As PACE takes off, realtors warn that unwary homeowners are complicating their finances"

Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:

Current homeowners should be aware that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac won't take on new loans for properties with a PACE lien, typically used to finance green improvements like solar panels.  So unless homeowners are planning to stay in their property long term, it'll be tougher to sell their property unless they pay off the PACE lien or the lien is allowed to be subordinated.

Car Free Building In Austin Will Have No Parking

Car Free Building In Austin Will Have No Parking | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
The Avenue in Austin will not contain a parking garage or any other on-site parking, and residents will walk or bike to the car free building.
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:
When you think of cities where residents don't have their own cars, cities like San Francisco with strong public transportation typically come to mind. However, with more Millennials delaying car purchases and using alternative modes of transportation, like Uber/Lyft, biking or walking, there is opportunity to live a car-free lifestyle, especially in the urban core of other cities. Case in point - Congress Development Partners is constructing The Avenue, "the first truly car-free luxury development in downtown Austin for people who work and live 24 hours a day in downtown".

GE wants to use CO2 pollution to make huge solar batteries

GE wants to use CO2 pollution to make huge solar batteries | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
Two big problems have been vexing environmental scientists for decades: How to store solar energy for later use, and what to do with CO2 that's been capture
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:
When we think of CO2, what typically comes to mind is its form as a greenhouse gas, a leading contributor towards global warming. What if we could take this pollution and use it to help store solar energy instead? GE has figured out how to do this by utilizing its proprietary "sunrotor" technology. Exciting stuff.

How Window Film Saved The Howard Hughes Center Millions of Kilowatts Worth Of Energy

How Window Film Saved The Howard Hughes Center Millions of Kilowatts Worth Of Energy | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
In order to improve its energy efficiency, the Howard Hughes Center adopted window film.
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:
For buildings with lots of wall-to-wall glass windows, installing window tint to block out the sun's heat can have a large impact on reducing cooling expenses, while also penciling out on ROI. Hines recently installed window tint on their 1.3-million-square-foot, 5-building Howard Hughes office center, which will save them roughly 2.1M kWh per year.

Las Vegas casinos seek to power their bright lights with renewable energy

Las Vegas casinos seek to power their bright lights with renewable energy | Sustainable Real Estate | Scoop.it
Ambitious plans by MGM Resorts, Wynn, and Las Vegas Sands are overshadowed by an ongoing battle with regulators and the state’s biggest utility
Clarence | MSRE, LEED GA's insight:
Great to see Vegas casinos embracing the sustainability movement. With huge rooftops and plenty of sunshine, it's the perfect environment for solar panels. However, by installing these panels, there would be less reliance on the state's monopoly energy provider, NV Energy, so regulators are requesting casino operators to pay huge penalties to offset loss revenue.
